Converting auto to manual?
« on: November 14, 2011, 09:58:46 AM »
I assume it's possible and sooner or later someone may be wanting to do it, anyone have an idea of what parts you'd need to start converting an automatic transmission to an manual transmission?

Also, it's a great marketing idea for a performance vendor to eventually do/offer.

Posted up to this over on the big board also, but figured I would spread the love here also ;)

The only reason to do this that makes sense financially is for a car that is heavily modified to the point that it would be too expensive to take the parts from the auto car and install them on a manual car. We are going to be doing this swap after the first of the year on a car that is pretty heavily modified so it makes sense for him to do the swap. We are also going to be installing a T56 instead of the stock 5 speed transmission at the same time, which really won't change the part list or cost (other then the actual transmission price difference) estimate too much for those that are going to want to know the actual price to do this and parts involved. We will of course be showing pictures of the conversion when we are done with it and will provide the part numbers that were needed.

Hope that helps,
Dave

I deserved that (as usual)!  What I meant was a much shorter and more smartass version of what Dave is saying... sell the automatic car, buy a manual car!

Thanks Dave from DDM.  I was coming from the point as our platform ages that life-long Kappa enthusiasts may someday consider an transmission transplant. Buying a car with possible quirks/history? vs keeping the one you've known/modified makes being able to modifying the transmission a valid consideration to me.

Why a T56, why not the newer 6060 in the vette?

Why a T56, why not the newer 6060 in the vette?

The 6060 in the vette would not work since it is mounted in the back to the differential directly. The 6060 from the CTS or Camaro would be a better choice ;)

The reason not to use the 6060 is based on cost, and the fact that the bell housing adapter we are going to use has been designed to work with the T56. I am honestly not sure of the differences enough between the 2 transmissions to know if the bell housing adapter could also be used on the 6060, and since there are already enough unknowns doing the swap, no need to through another possible problem in there.

That's a good reason. The T56 is definitely more widely used. I'm sure the 6060 will get it's share of aftermarket treatment eventually.
