Yeah, Yeah, Yeah: I'm an Idiot.
« on: October 27, 2010, 01:11:47 AM »
Now that we've gotten that out of the way, I need to ask some questions specific to my car that I really should already know the answers to.  Had I paid more attention to what others were kind enough to do for me after I wussed out of touching any wires at the Mod Meet, I would know them.  In my defense, at least I'm smart enough to realize I shouldn't be doing electrical work.

My alarm, remote start, and modem will be installed later this week and I'd like to be able to explain how my other mods are getting power so that nothing gets screwed up and the harnesses that already carry extra loads aren't stressed even more.  I also plan to ask that they check the wiring for the driver's seat heater since it stopped working, switch LED and all.  If anyone who was involved (GJ, Joe, Duck, Sal, Bryan, Scott, Bobby, Jeff, Lord knows who else...) happens to remember any of this, please let me know.

  • I think the wiring for my HID lows and fogs is pretty obvious with the hood open assuming it's all visible to the eye, and IIRC it all goes back to the factory harnesses.  Is that the case, or is there something hiding somewhere that they should know about?
  • Are the heated seats wired to the floorboard fuse panel or the one under the hood?
  • Are the heated seats wired to the same place, or are they separate?
  • What other function(s) are the heated seats wired into, if any?

Thanks!

Reed,
my guess on the seat heater is that the plug came un-plugged.  Moving the seat could do it if the the wires were pulled tight.\

As for the wiring- from what I remember, the two seats are both in the same fuse in the passenger floor, I think in spot #17 or 18?  Don't quote that one, but you should be able to see it easily if you used the add a fuse.  If Scott wired it for you in his super special way, then someone will have to jump in and answer.

Good luck!

GJ

I kinda figured the heater is unplugged somewhere too.  Thanks for the info, GJ!

Yep, chances are the plug just came undone under your driver's seat.  Raise it all the way up and push it all the way forward.  That way you should be able to see where it came unplugged.  Same thing happened to Chuckdoc's car.

I'm "pretty sure" that I did the power source on yours.  If that's the case, then both seats are wired to the same fuse in the passenger's footwell fuse and relay panel/BCM.  I probably even took a pen and wrote on the panel cover which fuse # it is.  If I did it my way, it'll look factory (no pigtail add-a-fuse, I add a terminal to the socket on the backside).

If this info doesn't get you what you need, we'll PM my phone number or yours and sort it out over the phone.  Just let me know.

Been a while since I did my heated seat but isn't there an in line fuse for it?

reedred : I think they were wired to the spare space. I remember someone refering to # 18  I think it was for the heaters but not sure. I do remember Big Sal and Bryan doing your HID lights .soldered right to the harness

Reed, did you get the seats sorted out?  Get a chance to see if the drivers' seat just came unplugged under there?

I helped out some, I do know we were trying to do it the same way Scott helped me wire mine (into the floorboard fuze panel/BCM with a factory terminal on the backside), but I know we pulled out my unused "pigtail fuze" at least once, too.  But regardless, I'm 99.99% sure that the rest of the wiring is the same, meaning that both seats are wired into the same fuze.  So the "unplugged theory" under your seat still seems the most likely cause of the driver's side problem.

But it should be easy to tell which method was used- if you open up the BCM and see a pigtail, then we used the pigtail, if not then Scott will have written on the inside of fuze box cover.  Heck we should've written on the fuze cover in either case.

The plug theory was correct, and my ass is now hotter than ever!

My install is going to have to wait a few weeks since they couldn't get to it over the last few days and I'd rather they not install anything right before I drive to VA Beach for the weekend.  Whenever they get to it I'll pass along the info on the wiring.  Thanks a lot for the help, y'all!

Thanks, GJ.  There is a line, but since you're the one that made it so hot I can probably pull some strings. ;)
