Turbo bearings bad, car smoke and oil in intake.
« on: May 26, 2010, 09:48:13 AM »
My used 07 Sky with Hahn Turbo had toasted bearings at 14K miles. I figured it was run hard but the tires didn't show it and the clutch was fine. Just the tell-tale sign of smoke at start up and oil in the intake.

I've always had the sound of compressor surging or a fluttering. Find that the BOV is cranked down pretty tight which would not always let out when the throttle body closed. Which might explain why the bearings were stressed and letting oil by.

Also now has all silicone hoses as when I wrapped the manifold and down pipe it transferred heat onto the intake pipe and was melting the rubber hoses.

Norm, I'm sorry to hear about you misfortune with the turbo. There's some great information in that post and it really deserves a thread of it's own to call home.   :D

NormSky what a sad deal.  So sorry to hear what has happened.  It would be nice if we could log the computer to see how it was treated in it's former life.  Sometimes you just have to use your gut instincts as you did.

Oops! Supposed to be in the "What did you do..." thread.

$100 later and it's good as new as I learned quite a bit on what does what and when.  :)

More FYI and than anything as I did not take pictures. Turbo rebuild kits for most turbos are around $50 and silicone hosing was another $50. If the bearing are really bad enoug to allow the compressor to make contact with the housing then your looking at couple hundred dollars.

Did you rebuild it yourself?  You are what stage Hahn?  You might want to think about a turbo timer, you know one of those cool down kits.

NormSky: i agree, those prices are for Mitsu turbos, for Garret are a little more, I don't want to know for a VGT of a Porche how much is that :)

K04 used in GXP/ Redline is about the same $50. Most exotic tool was a very big pair of snap ring pliers. Oh, and remembering to put it back together.  :)
