GMPP Stage I or II ???
« on: March 08, 2011, 10:24:03 AM »
Real simply question, why do some folks refer to their General Motors Performance Product turbo upgrade kit as I or II?  I was under the impression there was only one GMPP kit available, the one that takes the stock 260hp and bumps it up to 290hp?

It's not a stage kit at all, someone made that up after hearing talk about a stage upgrade on the super chargers.  It's just a sensor upgrade kit from GMPP.  It doesn't even upgrade the turbo, just the two sensors and a tune.

You are correct, there is only one upgrade kit and personally GM and the dealers are ripping us off those prices.   Sensors can be purchased from Werks for about $75. and the tune is free if you know someone who has licensing with HPTuners.  GM charges somewhere around $550 for the sensors and a tune sheet, the dealer then charges another $100+ to install it.  The kit should cost no more than $300 with a free install and tune from the dealer.  total BS.

The sensors take about a 1/2 max to install and the tune update takes about 20 seconds to squirt.

Which is why so many others make a simple, less expensive, version. The sensors are not even necessary for a low/no mod car. :agree:

If you install the GMPP tune yourself you will void your warranty. You can get the same or more power without the sensors from an aftermarket tune from the many vendors who supply them.

I fear they charge what they do because they can.  Supply and demand.  They are the ONLY tune one can get and still maintain complete warranty.  There are of course ways around that, and that is a debate all it's own and to each their own, but they charge what they charge because they can.  If that is the road the OP is looking to go, I suggest calling around to LOTS of dealerships and price shopping.  Some folks here have paid very different amounts for the same tune from GM.  I'm not sure exactly what they paid, but I know there has been a few hundred dollard difference between the highest and lowest amounts.  Shop around and then spend the savings on other goodies :) Like a backbone, cross beam brace, brake pads, flowers for the misses, 100 Octane fuel...  you know, goodies.  :)

Thanks DGP, appreciate it.  Everytime I see someone saying they have GMPP stage 1,2,3 (whatever), I always go; did I buy the wrong GMPP.

I went with GMPP because I wanted to maintain my warranty, and I thought it would be one of those items that was eventually discontinued by GM.  Folks are right for what you get it's expensive.  Best deal I could find at the time was Crate Engine Depot.  Dealer install was $75, thanks to a local big board member member who worked out a deal with his local Cadillac dealership about 40 miles from our home.

I was there for almost 8 hours because first they couldn't get a hold of GM tech support, then the number that was on the GMPP kit wasn't in GMs system, then the tech had to wait until GM could assign them a new number to enter it into GMs database before he could even install it.  However, they were very nice & apologetic.

I first tried my former Pontiac dealership and was told; Yeah, I think...we installed one of those kits a loooonggg time ago, and our town's big box Chevy dealership flat-out refused to install it.  GM isn't killing GM, their "our dealerships are independent owned and operated" policy is.

It was called stage II by many BECAUSE flash's owner, who is a gm engineer that worked on this product from what I remember, and who was the first to report on the upgrade at SF way back on 11-20-2008 before the kit was even offered to the public, titled the thread a stage II kit.
