Author Topic: HELP!! Vibration in the rear?? (Read 8367 times)

Alright so this is a long shot, but I was doing some research and saw that SOMEONE offered a driveshaft carrier bearing (the rubber bushing by the diff) as JUST the bushing. According to GM I have to buy the whole driveshaft, which is 400 dollars at my cost new OEM. DOES ANYONE KNOW if I can find just the carrier bushing!? I read posts on the forums stating people found them..

im suffering a vibration issue I can feel in the floorpan. the differential feels okay. I will also be replacing the diff mount with a poly setup, and I know one of my axles is on its way out after the drift event this weekend. when pitched and going right, I could hear a clunking/popping from the rear right.

any help would be appreciated! I do NOT want to buy a whole driveshaft.

thats what im saying. I saw a few people said they could get it on rock auto, but I see no such thing.

Do the sound test where you're in a parking lot and go in reverse with the wheel turned all the way in one direction and then the other. Backing up slowly and listening for the sound. You can verify the rear diff clutches this way and your axles if you have someone walking on the side.

Also, the center panel or backbone looses a bolt(s) you will have vibrations in the floor board.

Check also the bolts that connect the axle to the a-arms. Since you drift/autoX? they loosen and need to be checked from time to time.

I thought about the backbone brace maybe losing a bolt. but I did look...doesn't look like any bolts anywhere have came loose.

there is play on the passenger axle, none on the drivers,
I cant hear anything or feel anything abnormal with the diff AT ALL. ive done all sorts of manueveers to try and make it act up.

it still feels like its locking PERFECTLY.

when in 5th gear around 2k rpm and I begin to accelerate, it almost feels like a dead miss. but as it revs out it goes away.
when in a lower gear its not as noticeable.

I know that its gonna chug a little bit from a low rpm, but at 2k it shouldn't be like THAT.

Are you sure it isn't a wheel hub-bearing assembly ?

You might want to check the bolts that hold the hub assemblies to the knuckle, check all 4 corners. There are three bolts that like to back out on each hub under heavy stresses such as autocross and racing. The rears have an additional nut on the end of the axle shaft that may help to stabilize things a bit, maybe.

ill check all the bolts again, but im almost POSITIVE everything is tight since I went through it all before the event.

im honestly sure I broke something. I just need to figure out what.

it feels and seems like the cv joint could be jacked up.

anybody wanna climb under their car and see if both axles are supposed to have no play? sadly I don't have a second sky...

when the car is pitched sideways, going around a right turn, I can feel something popping in the rear right. hence why I think its an axle so much..

The axle stub should have no play in the spline. The big nut is torqued quite high, some 150 lb-ft or more. I'm thinking a loose wheel bearing or a bent hub.

im going to start with the axle, as it has play. and see where it goes from there...hopefully ill get the axle tomorrow and have it in Saturday afternoon.

This suggestion is out there, but would a Dyno be able to duplicate or help isolate the location of the sound of the vibration? Granted, renting a Dyno's isn't cheap.

putting the car on a dyno as is will destroy whatever is broken lol. im positive its the driveshaft, im just waiting on my tech to come back to my office and tell me hes certain that's the case.

now here is the predicament, to buy a stock one or to have the driveshaft shop make me an aluminum race shaft with no rubber bushings

Have you check the bolts on the drive shaft.
There has been reports by other members having the bolts loose or some of them missing all together.

yes, all the bolts on the front and rear bushings/bearings were tight. I replaced one axle, the other one is now throwing grease everywhere and has a ridiculous amount of play. got the axle ordered, will install it tomorrow. also doing a differential flush right now with the new p/n from gm with the lsd additives in it. 37k and I hadn't flushed it yet. its not going to hurt!

it feels like a driveshaft but there isn't a ton of play in it...

so we shall see. we put a wrench to all of the nuts and they were all tight, front and rear. the axle has ALOT of play in the bearings..

car has actually never been autocrossed. its been on a real circuit a few times, and drifted quite a bit.

I bought some aftermarket ones from Oreilly's/ before anyone knocks the choice, think about this..

oem axles at MY cost are 256 EACH from GM. they ONLY have a 12month 12k mile warranty.

the ones from oreillys were a whopping 86 EACH with delivery, and have a lifetime warranty.

in all honesty, the aftermarket ones look beefier too.

eventually ill upgrade to the DriveShaft Shop ones, but not until my car really makes some power.

its nice having a smooth ride again lol.

Yeah, I haven't really seen it either. those of us with LSD diffs have a lot less of a stressload on our axles. but drifting quite a bit is def. the cause of killing them. was just weird how intense of a vibration they made
