So after doing a bunch of maintenance at the dealership (trans, diff, new cat, new tires) I'm now hearing a new sound when turning at low speed. Typically on left hand, but also on a few right turns I hear a low wob wob wob noise coming from the rear of the car. I jacked each corner up this morning and shook the hell out of each wheel thinking it was a wheel bearing giving up the ghost, but everything was solid. I thought maybe it was the new tires as well, but I had the same kind on the car before and didn't have this issue (Nitto Invos).

The dealership did service the differential and I'm now wondering if they screwed something up. I specifically reminded them about the additive that is supposed to go in there as mine is an LSD, and I did see it on my invoice. Anyone else had the same thing happen? Really hoping this car isn't going to turn into a money pit now that's it's been paid off! I like it too much! I may bring it back to the dealership on Monday, but trying to get prepared for battle if necessary.

Did they actually put in the friction modifier?

I wonder whether they put the friction modifier in the diff, and secondly, whether they used the proper amount?

Usually the noise is described as a grinding sound.

It might also be a brake disk slightly warped and the backing plate is rubbing on the brake disk.

My wife said last night that it felt like something was grinding under the passenger seat as she was sitting in it... To me it sounds like a tire rubbing on a fender well, buts is definitely not doing that... What effect does the lack of additive have? How can I check out the brakes? I inspected the rotors this morning from he front and they looked even... Checked out the pads as best I could as well and they looked like they have ample life left in them...

If the dealer left out the friction modifier, the typical result would be a grinding sound on slow speed turns, such as those in a parking lot.

Took the car for a ride with the top down this evening... Noise is definitely coming from the differential. Sounds more like metal grinding/slipping when taking tight turns at slow speed in both forward and reverse. Taking it to the dealership Monday morning and getting them to fix it. My guess is that they didn't put the additive in at all.

Should I limit the driving I do until I bring it in? Is this something that could cause more damage if it goes unresolved? My gut tells me yes, but I haven't found any info confirming it will so far...

Always best to limit when in doubt. If they did screw the pooch, they won't cover additional damage once the problem was identified.

Today I was bored, the weather was awesome, and I didn't have a car to drive... So I went out and bought two quarts of royal purple 75w90 and replaced the diff oil myself. First time doing it, but in can't see why I paid anyone $150 to do it. After test driving the sound has about 90% gone away. I can still hear it a tiny bit when the car is completely cold, but I'm wondering if things will improve as the new oil circulates into all the cracks and crevices inside the diff. I drove it about 5 miles and then did some figure 8s in an empy parking lot and it was back to normal. Tomorrow I plan on calling the dealership and having a talk with the service manager. This is the third strike against this dealer and I will be taking my car elsewhere in the future, but I want to leave them with a piece of my mind.

Why write the dealership at all, chances are that's as far as it will go. Whereas sending the letter directly to GM will at least alert GM. Let GM contact the dealership to let them know they have an unsatisfied customer.

Got in the car this morning and BOOM... rubbing noise is back again... Spoke too soon...

Decided to drive it over to the dealership at lunch and have a talk. Talked to the same service person I did before. Told me it was normal wear and tear and that my car was just old enough and had enough miles on it to have those types of things fail. I guess he thinks I'm a big dummy. My Solstice has 65,000 miles (hit it yesterday) on it and is only 6 years old. I've owned way older clunkers that NEVER had rear end issued. Went to the parts desk and had a discussion with their parts guy to see what his thoughts were since they are sometimes more helpful. He seemed to think it may be a rear CV joint, was very helpful, but basically said it could be a bunch of things and all of them were expensive.

Right now I'm debating whether to just bring it to another mechanic from here on out that will be straight with me and doesn't try to rape me. I hate to give it to the dealership again and have them give me the standard "we can't find it" response. I really want to not have a face-off with the service manager because the last time I had one of those conversations, after an alignment shop tore the from bumper off and acted like it came in that way, there was a lot of loud heated strong language and I had to sue. I really don't want to go through that again.

Love the car, but I don't have time or money for this shiz... Just feeling sick and disgusted right now...

Talk some sense into me friends!

I've done some contemplating and I'm going to bring it to a shop across from my office tomorrow morning. Been knowing the mechanic there since I was a kid and he's worked on all my family members vehicles over the years. Good guy and the great thing is I can supervise from my window and walk over if he wants to show me anything or discuss something.

If I end up paying out my a$$ for this, or it can be traced to one of the shop monkey they have over there, then I will call GM and give them an ear full. Trying to stay optimistic. Fixing it is cheaper than a new car payment and I need to remember that. The Solstice is paid off, I've loved it since the day I got it, and there's nothing else on the market I'm crazy about right now.

You said you put Royal Purple but not the additive.
Even if RP says it has the additive as part of the mix I would still put it in.

Brought it by the new mechanic today and we agreed for him to take a look tomorrow as his day was already looking full. Good guy and I'm hopeful he can figure out what's up. He has a little experience with the problem with a mutual friend that had an 06 Solstice and a 07 Sky that had differential issues. We shall see what tomorrow brings.

LV, that interesting... I may run by O'Reilly's tonight and grab a bottle and give that a try... How much should I add? Can too much be added?

Threw in somewhere between 3-6 ounces of CRC positrac additive (7oz tube... squirted in as much as i could... I'm sure some spilled out) and took the car for a quick spin around the neighborhood... got on an undeveloped back street and did some slow hard slalom type turns with no noise whatsoever... not getting my hopes up, but I'll give it a test again in the morning. Hopefully $15 for some shop towels, a throw away pan, and the additive just saved me some cash!

You may want to call the parts guy at the dealer and ask him what is the size of the additive can/bottle.
Although I believe what you put in there is probably all you need.
