Well, since the initial post, reading all the excellent comments and reading lots of specs and reviews it boils down to two tires:  the PSS or DW.  The deciding factor is whether I want to drop the $$$ for the PSS.  I liked Critters post about the PSS's being quiet, that's really important to me but maybe not for the price difference.  The PSS had the highest favorable reviews of all the tires I've considered.  I haven't priced either set locally yet either.  Plan on calling my tire shop today to do some shopping.  Will let you all know what I decide.

I like a quiet tire as well and am glad to hear that the PSS's are quiet. Since I don't put a lot of miles on the car, a set of tires should last me for ~5 years (hopefully) and in my opinion, it's worth the extra $$$ for the PSS's. I've had great luck with Conti's on a few of my previous vehicles so I know they're a great tire as well so I'm sure you'll be happy either way and who knows - maybe your local dealer can make you a good deal on the PSS's to make the decision easy.

The difference in the two here at Discount Tire is $220 for a set of 4 mounted and balanced. Kinda steep but in the long run it isn't so bad.

I pulled the trigger and had my tire guy order in the DW's today.  I could have saved some money on the front end by buying them from Tire Rack and he said no problem with putting them on, but he would have to charge me for mounting and balancing, charge for rotation every time plus if I had some warranty issues it might be hard to get the Tire Rack to make good on any proration.  Same thing on the PSS's of course.  I live in rural North Central Arkansas so it's a 100 mile trip and a day of my time to get a better deal at a tire 'big box store'.  So, with it all said and done, I'm paying about $10 a tire more buying local than over the internet.  Worth it me thinks.  Thanks again for all the suggestions.

In my opinion, it's always good to keep the business with the local shop when you can. Be sure to let us know how you like them.

You will like them. Like I said if I hadn't the connection to Michelin I would have certainly put those back on. Very nice all around and they will give you all the grip in the wet you need. Enough said...Good luck with them...I also support the local suppliers. At the end of the day if you don't then there won't be that option for you or the next guy. Critter

I just went through this.

My stock tires were getting harder simply from time, and I removed them with only 7,000 miles on them and 3/4 of the wear left because they weren't doing the job any more (frankly they'd never done much of a job, only passable).  I expect something to do with the tire composition these days - they seem to harden up faster than they did in the good old days.

I went for the Michelins after extensive research and they are indeed great.

When you are looking at a $200 difference in a set of tires, I'd suggest that you consider how many miles you'll put on them.  It might just be worth the extra $1 per hundred miles over the life of the tires to enjoy top notch rubber.

Otherwise, several of the other tires mentioned rated quite highly and would be good choices. Look here and on the other 2 fora for extensive threads on the subject, but try to look at the ones in the last couple of years only as tire info changes pretty quickly.

Good decision, I almost went with the DW's but opted for the DWS' in a 255 instead. Did you go with the stock size?

Update on the new Conti DW's:  Love 'em!  Holy Kappa Car Batman!  Do these tires ever make a huge positive difference in the ride, feel and dynamics of the car.  I didn't know tires could be this quiet.  The car sticks to the road like glue.  I was afraid the overall comfort of the ride would suffer, but no, it has definitely improved.  I've very happy with the purchase.  Thank you all for 'steering' me the right direction.  Also got the alignment done today.  Excellent!
