Going to the Hospital
« on: June 25, 2018, 07:16:35 PM »
Thursday, 28 June I will be reporting to the Cardiac Care Center at Prince George’s County Hospital.  I will be undergoing open heart surgery.  I have a heavily calcified bicuspid aortic valve.  This is not new information as it was discovered about 30 years ago. We have been monitoring it since then during my annual physical. It has finally closed down to a point were something had to be done with it.  I will be getting an organic bovine replacement.
During all the testing, scans, and scopes done prior to surgery they found 2 70% blocked arteries including the ‘widow maker’.  They will be doing a bypass on those while I am there.  I will be in the hospital for about 3 days or so and then a ten week recuperation period.
I am in good spirits about all of this as it isn’t a surprise; I knew this day was coming.  The last 6 months or so (looking back now) I really hadn’t been feeling that good.  I was always tired and any excursion left me short of breath.  The worst part of this entire chapter of my life is that I will have to drastically change my diet.  I will have to cut way back on red meat and eat more fish, chicken, vegetables and fruits.  I also need to lose weight.  Two weeks ago I made up my mind to at least try any food put in front of me.  So far I have eaten everything put in front of me.  Yesterday my Daughter came over and cooked ‘healthy’ for me.  Everything she put on the table I had never eaten before.  I went back for seconds.
Oh and I have lost 10 pounds in the last two weeks and quit smoking.

70%?  You can do better than that, 70% is a C-.

Get well soon Critter, we need your supervision without you it's anyone's guess what kind of trouble GJ, Elff, and I might get into, and I'm sure we are going to try and find out while you are recovering.

Yeah John I am a slacker.  Hell they wouldn't even be looking at the arteries if it wasn't for the valve.  They figure while they are in there, they might as well tune me up.

It's amazing what an inducement to stop smoking a heart condition is!  I don't remember my last smoke, but I do remember the heart attack, which occurred shortly after my last smoke!

Best for you to come, follow the doctors orders, and start living a bit healthier.  Be glad you caught it before it caught you out!

Congrats on the STOP SMOKING! Stick to it. I quit 7 years ago after 4 stints in the lower abdominal area (aorta).

Hope all goes well.

Good luck Critter, and congrats on the smoking cessation.

So, with a bovine valve, you will officially be allowed to bullshit all of the time!  (Not that that's stopped you before, of course.)

We'll be praying for a speedy recovery and congrats on the stop smoking.  You'll still have to come down for a pretzel burger when you're up to it.

We're sorry to hear that you need the procedure, but very happy that you're having it done. I had a 3 way bypass several years ago, and have not felt this well in quite a while. You're going the correct direction. Congratulations, and best wishes. We'll be praying for the best possible outcome.

Get well fast and completely, best wishes from me and my family.

PS: I thought you quit smoking like 3-4 years ago during last SMMM and I was admiring you doing that. Now I'm fighting to quit smoking also, 2-3 failed attempts in last months, I am decided sooner or latter to quit, I'm in the search for a working solution.

Denise and I are with John, he is doing well and in good spirits. Still has one drain tube installed.  Some complications during surgery so he will likely be hospital 3 more days.
