Author Topic: 07 Sky Throwing Nasty Codes... Need Help (Read 15053 times)

Hello!

I just bought a Saturn sky last week, and although the test drive and everything seemed to be in perfect shape, there have been some problems that popped up. The car is throwing some codes. P0011, P0700, and P2637. Initially there was a P0010 instead of the 11, but replacing the VVT solenoid got rid of 10 and replaced it with 11. Not too worried about that right now though. The one I am concerned about is the P2637, which I believe is what my main problem is. The car downshifts very harshly going into second and first. This doesn't always happen, it seems to come and go. When it does happen though, the check engine light comes too. Other than the codes and the rough shifting I wouldn't expect anything wrong that I know of. What could be the cause of this, and how can I remedy it? I know what all the codes mean I just don't know where to start. Thank you!

Chris, when you changed the VVT solenoid did you change them both? One is different from the other and most change them both at the same time.

P0011 - Intake cam position performance

Step 1: measure resistance of actuator, 8-12 ohms...if good goto next
Step 2: jump fused 12v power to the actuator, valve should move...if good goto next
Step 3: Pull valve cover and check timing, my twincharger build thread has some details on that

P0700 - TCM requested MIL

P2637 - Engine torque signal to TCM invalid.

The TCM stuff sounds like a wiring issue (harness, connectors, grounds, etc).

Thanks for replying. I'm afraid all of this is way too technical for me lol. I may have to take it to a dealer.

I believe these problems were fixed by also replacing the exhaust side of the vvt solenoid. Only reason I believe is because the car had another problem come up.. it is idling very rougly. To the point where it shook me at a stop light. Then it stops after 30 seconds but will come back. I do not drive it anymore and am planning on taking it to a mechanic ASAP. It seems like it could be a timing belt. Wish me luck.

Chris, the car fas a timing chain not a belt and how old is the battery in the car? Some have had a really rough idle with a bad battery. Read the date code on the top of the battery and if it's been in there a long time get it checked and consider replacing it.

sorry, as long as it does the same thing it's what I meant. I'll check it when I can. I've already disconnected it and reconnected it. How old do should it be to replace it?

Chris, I wouldn't arbitrarily change the battery but an old battery can do weird and unpredictable things in a modern car. Some have gotten 5 years from a battery and one fella got 10 years before he started having rough idle issues he could't pin down.
Just saying that don't forget about the battery when troubleshooting. If it's an older battery just replace it before any other issues arise.

This car are very battery dependent. A weak not necessary bad battery can cause these cars to do all kinds of weird things.

The vast majority change their battery WAY before that. You've done really well with that battery that's for sure.

Yes, I'm surprised too but it keeps working and I haven't had any issues so no reason to replace it.

On a side note the original battery in my S10 went like 13 years before I had to replace it.

Update: taken to a mechanic and they're stumped. Taking to a GM dealer in the morning.

Update 2: changed the oil, lots of sludge. Poor maintenance from previous owner. Still acts funny. We tested the battery and it comes back weak under load, but fine normally. Don't know what it means or if it could be the cause, but I don't want to drop the $100 or so on the battery until I take it to the GM dealer. If the GM dealer can't help then I'm going to get a new battery.

Replace the battery now, you may save yourself the cost of a trip to the dealer.

Update 3: replaced the battery... Same problem. Got an appointment at the GM dealer Thursday.

Update 4 (for whoever cares): quoted $1,200 fix for the timing chain. Since it's getting done at a Chevrolet dealer and I work at the Honda branch of the same over I get a discount in labor from ~$90 to ~$50.

Sorry to hear that Chris, the VVT works on oil pressure and in one of your posts you mentioned sludge during a oil drain and change. You might need to flush your engine.

What all are they replacing?

If the vehicle has an aftermarket intake, please make sure to check the MAF before doing the timing belt. If the MAF gets contaminated the TCM and ECM will not agree on the calculated torque and cause the P2637. Even if it has the stock intake, definitely clean the MAF with MAF cleaner and check again. You are not getting any codes showing a cam crank correlation error, so not sure why the timing chain right now, other than as a maintenance item. As for the VVT codes, we see quite a few of those clear up with fresh oil and not actually need the solenoids replaced. If you need any further questions answered, feel free to give us a call.

I forgot to mention that the issues mentioned about the downshifts were fixed by replacing the exhaust vvt solenoid. The new problem that it's in the shop for is the timing chain.
