Top Latch - bent, is there a way to fix it????
« on: May 05, 2009, 05:09:06 PM »
OK, my wife borrowed the GXP the other day - she was putting the top down and our 7 year old put the release handle back in the "latched" position while she was stowing the top. The "hook" hit the trunk latch and it bent the hook - not much, just a little. Just enough, so that when she tried to put the top up it would not latch - the hook rubbed on the top of the opening for the latch and would not go past the latch pin (?) bracket ( the pin that the hook latches to, to hold the top snug to the window frame ). She did get it latched by gently pulling down on the hook with her finger while latching it.

So... I need to adjust the hook or bend it back -- any easy way to do this???? can the latch be dis-assembled OR should I just play stupid and go to the dealer and see if GM will pay for it?

Pics to follow if needed - Thanks all!!

I could be wrong but I thought the bracket can be taken apart.
I believe there is some kind of allen screw that holds it place.
There was a thread on the BB about this issue and I believe it mentioned a fix.

The dealership did the exact same thing to mine when they were showing me the car. You'd think they'd teach the sales people about such things.

They fixed it before I picked up the car, I'm sorry but I really don't know how they fixed it.

My latch was like that when I first got the Car 2008GXP.I did the same as your wife did put my finger over the latch and pulled it down a little. I though that was just the way it works.Figured nothing was ever perfect. :idk:

Extend it and use a pair of channel locks to bend it back.

I had the same problem twice, once when I got the car originally and then again when I put the top down with the latch extended. Fixed it both times by extending the latch and bending it DOWN a little with some visegrips - just like DeepBlue said. Just be sure to grab as much of the latch as possible before bending and not just bend the tip only.

'08 Brazen Gxp purchased new 12/08 with all options - even (sigh) AT. Have GM CAI. Waiting for GMPP and Solo Exhaust. Looking to get together with other local members - perhaps in Doral.

There is a TSB on this exact issue and the dealer will replace the latch.

Did you ever get the TSB's organized in a way that could be either downloaded by members or viewed on the forum?
