Drag Racing an Auto
« on: May 20, 2009, 09:12:13 PM »
So going down to the 1/8 mile track my first time in the next few weeks and I just had a few questions for those who have an auto and have drag raced them before.

1. I know I need to hold the button to turn all the controls off for 10seconds or just click it once to put it into competition mode. Not sure which I will do yet since I don't want to send the car flying to the wall if I loose control lol.
2. I should probably deflate my rear tires to like 20-25psi to get better launches
3. But what gear should I try drag racing in? Should I do it in D, I, L, or 4?

My only performance mods are GMPP Tune, GMPP CAI and Backbone for suspension.

Try 19 lbs in the tires, and I would just use the first click on the traction control, that turns off traction control and leaves ESC (sideways) in the normal setting, Competition mode increases ESC and if you hold it in it turns it all off. Hold the brake with the left foot rev to about 2800 rpm and side step the brake.

Bingo, just not sure about the tire pressure, depends on the track. If it's sticky then you'll be fine with whatever you are currently running.  You can take off in any gear, won't matter but will come up fast in the 1/8 mile.  Now I can't foot brake that high, the tires start turning but 2200 to 2400 depending on the air temp / pressure.

Ah ok I see so I guess I will try a bunch of different pass's in different gears and launching between 2000-2800 to see which one works the best since I plan to be there from like 4-10pm.

Practice, practice, and more practice.  If they are using all 3 yellow lights, punch it as soon as the second light goes out

It helps to line up at a very slight angle (a couple of degrees) when you prestage and stage shallow this gives a bigger foot print in front of the line light and gives a slightly better chance of not red lighting plus you can leave a little earlier ..early drag racers figured this out and built their front ends with tire offset NHRA instituted a 2 degree rule on front end tire alignment that I believe is still there
