You know, I don't know if this will do the trick.  As Soup says, the culprit is the high-pressure fuel pump.  It sits right next to the firewall, under the driver's wiper blade.  I don't think the sound is coming up through the hood but from the upper dash - maybe even the defroster vent.  As a matter of fact, I think it is quieter from outside the car by the hood than from the driver's seat.  I also have the improved foam insulator GM came up with and it helps...some.  If we can figure out how to kill that sound, I'd love it.

Don, you're in the Baltimore area?  I'm not far away.  I could drive up and let you have a look and listen prior to the Mod Meet.

I'm in Owings Mills. I'm trying to move so we'd have to play it by ear. I will be at the meet though.

So I just ordered my panel poppers.  Don, will you be bringing rollers or should I buy one?  Besides sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, and a scraper, anything else I need to bring?

How did the cold treatment instead of hot treatment for removing the stock asphalt go?

I'll bring rollers. We ended up dong the cool treatment - turns out that stuff comes out pretty easily just by pulling on it on a cool morning. Took about 10 minutes. Might be good to have some dry ice if it's warmer this time.

I tried pulling mine on a cool morning, but didn't work for me.  Had to go with the blowtorch and it took hours. Uggh.  Hopefully yours will be easier!

Ahhh, not really too much material is required then.  Thanks!

Mmm.... or just a bag of regular ice even if a cool morning does it.  I'll see what I can get.

That's what's got me thinking about how to do this.  Used to do field work with dry ice.  It lasts about a day.  That's why I was thinking if cold weather does the trick, maybe a bag of regular ice would as well.  Would be a heck of a lot easier.  The alternative is that I pick some up near my house Friday am, bring it down and immediately rip the interior out and use the dry ice.  Could be done - and that way the car would be ready for Don when he comes on Saturday.  Will you be down Friday Critter and want to do this?  I think it is just you and I for sound deadener....

OK, as noted elsewhere, did this at SMM7.  It is 2 very solid days of work, lots of blisters, 5 bandaids on my hands last night, but well worth it.  With the top up on the Beltway, it is as quiet as my wife's Murano.  Eric Clapton and B.B. King sound like they are in the car with me on Riding with the King.  Haven't tried the top down yet (full trunk, rain, excuses, excuses).

I have the stock exhaust and am glad I did not do the trunk.  The exhaust (at an appropriate volume) is music to my ears and it is improved now.  Getting rid of the other racket, it sounds deeper if a bit quieter.

I am having to relearn the pedals as the floor is now higher with the deadener beneath it.

A few tips.  Dry ice on the stock asphalt-based stuff on the floor - no good.  Just made it hard, not brittle.  Mine took a propane torch and 2 solid hours of scraping.  Watch where you point that flame but if you run it over the stuff until it bubbles (which it does very quickly), it comes up like butter.  But there's lots of it and its still 2 hours.  Or you can wait a couple of years and it seems to just come off on its own.  Critters apparently came up like rolling up a mat.

GJ, JimmyBaja, and TomatoSoup (I can't quite remember who told me what now but thanks to all 3!!!) had me put a lot more CLD tiles on the back wall than in the pics and I'm glad they did.  In particular, I put little pieces of it in the recesses for the subwoofer (leaving the stock stuff on the back but putting more tile pieces around it) and the bass is wonderful.  In fact, I used to increase the bass over stock setting.  Now, I have turned it down below the stock setting.  Its wonderful!!!

Last, this is really a mod meet deal.  I would have done half the job I did without all the great tips from those that went before.

Many thanks to Don (Rudeboy) for all his help and for coming up with this solution!  The automakers would be smart if they were talking to you!!

Haven't tried it with the top up yet, but top down, the exhaust is behind me (I still have to do the trunk) until I hit the gas, then it all around me :)  Radio sounds a lot beetter, but it might be a while before I hear it with the top up.

I looked back at pictures I took of my install and the dash was not out on mine.  I guess you can do it both ways.  I am guessing that you could add some of that closed cell foam in certain places behind the dash considering they are known to rattle a bit.

The trunk was easier to do, but not easy by any means.  The pieces have to be cut to fit very accurately or the pre-formed carpet that is removed will not go back into the trunk evenly.  This can interfere with the top being stored in the trunk.  This is especially important on and around the gas tank...also make sure that upon reinstallation of the trunk carpet, the rubber water ducts are plugged back in fully to ensure no water gets into the trunk.  The foam is water resistent and you could get some water sitting in there that would take a long time to evaporate away.  Take your time removing the carpet also, as there is a light that plugs into the rear of the carpet that needs to be disconnected.  Just a few tips.  I hope they are useful.

GJ - I just remembered that you asked for a ride in my car once I got the sound deadening stuff in because you also had a GXP with stock exhaust.  Sorry, dude.  I was exhausted and sore when I finished on Sunday and had work to do at home so I kinda skeedadled and forgot about this.  Aside from what I have already posted, I have driven it now with the top down and have the same comments.  If  you like the stock exhaust, you will like this if you don't do the trunk.  It is half a click quieter but, because the rest of the racket from under the car is gone, I can hear the exhaust more clearly - top up or down.  I think if I did the trunk, I would not hear the exhaust at all.  Of course, if you wanted louder exhaust, you should talk to those with Solos.

Yeah, it was a long few days.  I don't even remember the plane taking off from BWI.  I fell asleep during the "this is what to do when the plane is about to crash" speach.  I woke up when the wheels touched down in Charlotte.  Then slept half the time on the flight from CLT to SAN.  I have slept very well the past few nights.  But it was all worth it.  Some of the most fun parts of the mod meet happend after dark... and after that too!  We almost made it till morning twice.  I had a blast and hope to do it again soon!

And no worries on the ride.  I will get a chance sometime in the future.

Now that the slackers are gone we can get down to business ;) The good news for those of you who will be removing the asphalt is that asphalt melts at 180°F. That's bad for durability but means you can scrape most of it out with a heat gun and a putty knife. Being careful not cut into the e-coat, warm an edge of the asphalt, slip the putty knife under it and work you way across.

OK, so I've started doing this, and the edge of my putting knife keeps scratching/cutting into the ecoat... Is it anything to worry about, or after I've got it cleaned up, should I lay some primer down?

Thanks
