Hi guys, just about to do my sound project next week, just a thought on the posts etc. I have seen on this subject. Has anyone compiled the pics/instructions for the passenger compartment  floor, rear wall, , doors, trunk ? I see a few posts (thanks to all, especially Don)  that kinda cover it but wondered if someone had put together anything with a nice concise reference point.

Be nice to know how many tiles on a door, backwall, trunk floor etc. . I know the guideline is 25% of coverage.

What's a little confusing when you look at the various posts/pics is that they seem to be doing different things with the foam and PVC in different places on different cars. Not always the same. Enough cars have been done, so someone must have an idea of best practice. I will figure mine out based on what's there already  but would be good to have it all assembled for those yet to do their cars.

The first page of this thread goes into detail on the doors and the floor. I believe Bryan (nolanb) posted pics for the trunk and back wall, but I think they got lost when this thread got trashed earlier this week. I'll try to add the pictures back in on Saturday. I should probably split this thread in two - kits and directions and commentary.

Thanks Don! Probably a good idea to put a permanent link into in on your Sound Deadener Showdown page  so it doesn't get mixed in with discussions. I just sent you a Word document  on email that contains most all the pics and comments I thought might be needed when I do mine. You could use this instead of going back all thru the threads as good starting point. The file is kinda big 3mb.

Got all my  packages as well , thanks alot !!

I done what Don told me to do, this is not an exact science, I tapped on different parts of the door and floor panels and the back wall both inside and out, if the panel seemed "live" meaning it had some resonance I put some CLD on it, usually just a small piece, I was actually having fun running around tapping on everything, I just used my finger to tap. This is the first step to reduce the "buzz" after that you want as large a continuous piece as you can with the mat, make as small a hole as you can when you have to and don't forget to shave the factory Styrofoam pieces in the bottom of the door so the panels go back on snug, about 1/4"

Thats  why I thought Don might want to take on the task of putting a instruction list with pics together and post. Easier for him to tell us and the next guy what to do once on the forum with all the illustrations. I sent him a nice collection of pics and descriptions  from these threads, should be able to piece together a overview. With all the experience on this  now it should be pretty straight forward.

Agree its not rocket science but folks are fussy about how they do this stuff and want to know its correct before they put the car back together. Little things like shaving the styrofoam are easily over looked if you have to piece together an idea of how to do it by reading  thru a couple of dozen posts and assimilating all the info and then still being confused by some of the variations seen in the pics from one car to another. I know I went thru that until I put the Word document together.

I have an unrelated question, but a since you did this I thought I'd ask. Last summer I hit a brick and it made a slight dent underneath... from what I can tell it is just behind the passenger seat towards the back right around that big drain plug.

My question is, is the floor hollow? In other words, if I removed the rear seat and looked under the carpet, would I be able to see the dent and tap it out?

Depending on the exact location I think you would be able to get at it. If you look on page 1 of this thread you will see the pics with seats/floor covering removed for an idea if its possible.

Step one for this process is try and understand what you are attempting to fix, it is not exact, you are not rebuilding an engine. If you read all the posts you might get an understanding of what you are doing and why, it helps a lot. While I am sure some instructions from Don would help many I watched him do Bryan's trunk, he had a stack of CLD tiles in one hand and just walked around tapping with the other, that is what you need to understand. For the doors you could do a decent set of instructions because there is a lot of special things to do, like seal the holes, but if you first understand what you are doing and why it will all be a lot easier. Step one you are trying to stop panel resonance, this is how Dynamat has sold a ton of stuff for years, and typically where they stop. You do not need to lay Dynamat all over every surface in the door, it just makes your car heavy. the second thing you do is seal the doors mostly so that sound is trapped in the doors as they are hollow. Then you create a sound barrier the MLV (mass loaded vinyl) sheet, does that, this is what separates Don's system from most, the CLD tiles, or even dynamat will reduce vibration and resonance. It is not a very good sound barrier, so while the door no longer resonates, you still hear the road noise the same as you always did. That is what the MLV stops along with sealing the door, now you have and anti resonance treatment and a sound deadening treatment, together they are awesome. Absolutely check Don's website before you start, it helps a lot.

Been there done that Lil Goat, Don is working on the Word Doc (that has all the compiled info on this subject)  I sent him as a reference for future users.

Just to clarify, Don HAS done step-by-steps for the doors and floors (at the beginning of this thread). We're just missing the back wall and truck, right?

There was some info on another thread with the back wall here:

http://kappaperformance.com/forum/index.php?topic=1887.20

, I compiled all of the pics and comments on those items , yes the trunk is missing completely.

If Don has something on the trunk and cleans up the document I sent him then there should be everything needed for future reference on the mod. Probably be better  for him when he gets orders he could just steer folks to a thread that has it all instead of being spread all over the threads.

The hardest part about the trunk is actually getting the carpet back in LOL.

Spicy I take it you didn't take any pics of the trunk install?

I hear its a :censor:  to get it back in , tips?  Did you put down the three layers of tiles, foam and then vinyl on top in the trunk?  Reason I asked is Don mentioned the back wall was to tight to use foam and to go with just tiles and vinyl, wondered about the trunk or is there just sections where all three go in.

As I'm just about to start any advice is appreciated.

I have some photos of the trunk SD material placement that nolanb took at MDMM6 and had sent me.  If you PM me your email I can send them on to you.  Nothing about un/re-installing carpet etc. though.

Just to clarify (credit where it's due) those are Bryan's pics (nolanb) - I'm just the intermediary :)
