Painted Calipers - G2
« on: August 22, 2009, 07:37:32 PM »
I just painted my calipers with the G2 paint.  This stuff is awesome.

I only used half of the can.  I'm thinking of using the other half for the IC pypes.

Heres a link to a how to article I wrote:

Please edit the URL, if it is clicked because of a wrong statement is throwing File not fund page.

Other than that pretty straight forward perfect for DYI, thank you.

In my opinion would be great to have some links from where we can buy decals.

Hope you think fast. A few hours after you mix the catalyst in, that can is hard...

Thanks for the feedback, I fixed the url

There is a link to the decal vendor (ASAP Digital imaging) in the article.

I poured 1/2 the paint into a glass jar and added only 1/2 of the catalyst.  I saved the rest of the paint and catalyst (unmixed of course) in the original containers.  It wouldn't do any good to save the mixed paint :)

I've got my paint in, just waiting for a good day to do it. Also waiting on my ASAP decals to show up.

Also while you have your wheels of go ahead and paint the , what I call the hat area and the top  of the rotors will make a cleaner look will not have the grey rusty look.  Did the caliper with orange G-2 and the rotors with Dup a color caliper paint ( Black) was done 3 years ago and still looks new.

A single G2 kit has enough paint for the 4 calipers and the 4 rotors?

By the look of mine, I'd say it has even more paint than that Kelu. It looks like it will certainly be enough for a couple coats on all 4 calipers.

Generally 2-3 coats, right?

That's why I'm asking, looks like G2 is not available in my country and I want to make sure before I go with this.

Exactly. HotScott and I bought 1 can of black and 1 can of blue G2 and mixed them together to darken the blue and we had plenty. I think we may have even given some of the black away.

Thanks guys, I have started to search G2 kit around these places but I could find only Foliatech kits or Duplicolor Brake Caliper's sprays.
The only downside is that I have to let it dry long hours, other than that looks juicy.

I used the brush on style caliper paint.  After applying the decal I hit the calipers with a light coat of spray clear coat for engines.   I think it helps keep the decals and calipers looking fresh.

Do not use the duplicolor.  I painted mine with it and it only lasted a year.  Then started to flake off very slowly.  Now the problem is how to remove it without hours of work.

Darktech removed his and it took quite a few hours.

Agreed. G2 is the way to go. Haven't heard of Foliatech. Kelu, Is powder coating an option for you? By the time you pay for shipping, powder coating may work out to be the same price? Just a thought.

Will powdercoating last with repeated heating and cooling cycles? I know heat is what's used to set it, but I don't know it would stand up to the extreme heat of braking.

Yes, that is correct. You will only need half to do one car.  I only used half of the paint and half of the hardener and saved the rest.  Note that the shelve life is only 6 months according to what it printed in the instructions.  Don't mix all of it or yopu will have to throw away whatever you don't use.  It dries very hard.

It will depend on the type of powder coat but yes there are some that will hold up to the heat.

Do not use the duplicolor.

I used duplicolor but also overcoated that with clear engine enamel.  I was really doing that to help with the longevity of the vinyl stickers, but my duplicolor has held up well, 1 year and a half so far - no chipping.

But I like the two part system better (G2) - two part systems are capable of much harder/durable coatings in general.

As for powder coats, saying "power coat" isn't that much different than saying "paint"  - there are lots and lots of types of powder coats, but there certainly are some that are high gloss and high temp resistant.

I'd bet that a service like this would work great:

Question is how much $ ?
