Rear speakers
« on: September 04, 2009, 10:19:26 AM »
I know I know people say you can't here them. Well since I did the Rudeboy sound deadening in my doors I can. I actually want to replace them with something a little less efficient, as when you move the fader to reduce the rear speaker volume it also reduces the sub volume as they are tied together, I don't want to reduce the sub volume of course. Has anyone replaced the rear speakers with something they like. I hope to replace them when I do the next step of the sound deadening. I believe they are 3.5" speakers. I will most likely put chokes on them to block bass input so they do not distort, I have even thought of just putting in wide range tweeters. They are after all just for fill.

Why not just find some resistors rated for that power level and insert them into the circuit before the speakers?

Because the factory speakers suck, I do want better speakers and I believe they have resistors on them. I will eventually swap out the sub too. Then the head unit.

Turn down the rear speakers, then turn up the bass to get your sub back :)

If you upgrade the main speakers, I bet you won't need rear speakers at all. Then you can unplug them and have a sub adjustment.

I would get a new headunit before you do anything. That will make the stock speakers come alive.

You reminded me that I actually have one of the highest quality Single DIN units that exists laying around from my last car. Eclipse. 16 volt outputs for when you replace the stock amp. Aux in for iPod. 10 band Parametric EQ, 3 way crossover.

Let me know if you're interested.

I have upgraded the front speakers to JBL component system, and done the sound deadening. I majored in audio engineering in college, and have worked as a sound system designer and a sound engineer for several bands, been and on air DJ and club DJ. I know a little about designing systems, I also was a car stereo installer way back when. I know what I want to do, just wanted input if anyone had found a good 3 1/2 ". These are fill speakers and help a lot with the top down, they unfortunately are linked with the sub on the fader. Turning down the power to the sub and turning up the bass, is not linear, end up with fat boosted bass. The head unit will come when I have $1500 to spend on it, already know which one I want. I will be ripping out the back panels to do the sound deadening, so why not upgrade the speakers while I am there. I guess I will keep looking. I want a very small coaxial with a rubber surround and decent power handling ability.

Doesn't JL Audio have a 3.5" coaxial?  That would be a good choice for the rear fill.

Here you are, Cat-less, Solo Exhaust and God knows what else and you want better speakers!!!!!!

You got it all wrong Dude.  All you need is a CD of a Double A Fuel Dragster about to go down the quarter while your sitting at a Red Light waiting for the lite to turn green.  Turn up the volume as the lite changes green and listen to the Sweet Vibrations.   :brnout: :brnout: :brnout:

You know Goat, the stock speakers are in fact awesome.  They just need to be driven with a better headunit.  My system kicks ass with the Pioneer AVIC driving them.

Joe I wanna hear your speakers at the mod meet.  I am considering now just getting a new HU and calling it a day after what you wrote.

I used a set of 4" Pioneers to replace the stock speakers,  they didn't exactly fit but with some help from a  few cable ties they are locked in place. Sound much better than the originals, nobody sees whats behind the plastic. Went with Alpines up front , am about to do the sound deadening work in the fall so hoping it improves them all.

No problem, put your favorite music on your iPhone and you can plug it into the cable in my glove box.

I stand by my opinion the factory speakers are crap, louder due to more power is not good it's just louder. I much prefer my upgrades up front to the factory. In sound reproduction the transducer is key, power needs to match the transducer yes. I have heard Jonymac's after the full damping treatment the factory system sounds good, but it could certainly be improved on. I will eventually get a new head unit, the longer I wait the more prices drop. Doing the speakers first is more in my current price range ($200). I have JBL GTO 6.5 component speakers up front now, a gift from my son. I may upgrade these too in time.

I have pretty much decided on Audiobhan AS31Q 3.5"s and a Memphis 10" dual voice coil super shallow sub 15-SC10D4.

They will either get installed at the mod meet or be installed before.

After much reading and thinking I am going a slightly different direction, first off I am a BIG MB Quart fan, have been for years the MB Quart sub consistently beats the Memphis, and it is about $60 cheaper, at about $100. I still like the Audiobahn 3.5's but found some Kicker 3.5's on sale from the same place as the sub, so saves on shipping. I went with the following
MB Quart RSH 252 Reference Series Car Audio 10" Subwoofer

and the Kicker DS350 Car Audio DS Series 3 /12" Coaxial Speakers

 with some 300mhz bass blockers.
Most likely will install these at the mod meet when I do the sound damping. I want to eventually upgrade the front door speakers to MB Quart's

It means I am going to try and stuff a 10" speaker in an 8" hole to give me a "cleaner" bass sound from the sub, I can only do this because I do not have a speed governor in my car.

The little rear speakers are cheap enough that if I am pulling the car apart why not change them. The bass blocker will prevent the speakers from distorting by blocking the bass from ever getting to them and it is a whopping $6, all I really want from them is some vocal reinforcement with the top down, if Rudeboy and I were not installing the sound damping anyway I would be doing this yet. I have volunteered myself as slave labor to Rudeboy so he will help us do the sound dampening, we are going to make some template to help anyone that wants to do this at the meet.

I honestly don't think I would hear the difference.  I know that I don't hear a lot of the higher sounds - hearing tests have proved that, so it is probably not worth the effort for me to replace the speakers,  The damping sounds like a good idea, I would like to get the back half of my car done, trunk and back panels, but both of my pockets have already been dipped into for this mod meet.

I got the speakers and sub in yesterday, The pictures are posted above but do not begin to do them justice. The little 3.5 look to be very well made and really good quality, it looks like they put as much into them as there bigger brothers. Lets hope they sound good.
Now for the sub, do to the limited space we have I did a lot of reading on different shallow subs. This is the weirdest thing I have ever seen, it is just 3 1/2 inches deep should fit easily in the space we have and it's a 10" instead of an 8". Now for the weird part. The voice coil, you know that big magnet that is on the back, well it's not there, it's in the front in the center of the cone! It is a very large magnet smack dab in the middle of the speaker, weirdest thing I have ever seen. I hope it sounds as good as it looks. I got a fantastic deal on the stuff, sub was under $100 and lists for $250, the 3.5's were half price. Here is a picture of the back of the sub, no magnet. Dual voice coil 2 ohm like the factory sub.
