Door speaker ?
« on: September 10, 2009, 04:10:08 AM »
Looking to upgrade at some point in time the door speakers and need to know one ?
The stock door speakers are 2ohm correct?  I've seen several 6 1/2 speakers and some are rated 2 ohm while others are rated 4 ohm.
Do I need to get the 2 ohm speakers or can I run the 4 ohm speakers?  Also is there any positive/Negative on running one vs the other with the stock system?
Thanks

I don't know if the stockers are 2 ohm, but 4 ohms is pretty much the industry standard in the aftermarket. Installing them should not hurt anything. Weather they will sound better or not is purely up to your ears and your taste.

Did alot of reading today.
The door speakers are 2 ohms and you are correct the industry standard is 4 ohms.  There are a few speakers mostly component that are variable 2/4 but there are some that are rated 2 ohm infinity has some 2 ohm speakers.
Infinity Reference 6022si
General
Design 2-way
Tweeter Design 1" Dome
Tweeter Composition Textile
Woofer Composition IMPP
Woofer Surround Hi-roll rubber
Parts Warranty 1 Year
Labor Warranty 1 Year
Specifications
Sensitivity 93.4 dB at 2.83 volts
87.7 dB at 1 watt

Frequency Response 53 - 21k Hz
RMS Power Range (Watts) 2-50
Peak Power Handling (Watts) 150
Impedance (Ohms) 2
Top-mount Depth (Inches) 1 13/16
Bottom-mount Depth (Inches) N/A
Cutout Diameter or Length (inches) 4 15/16

If you go with 4 ohms nothing bad is going to happen since the system was originally setup for 2 ohms front seakers, it just will take more power to push the 4 ohm the speaker so they may not be as loud.  The positive is that almost any aftermarket speaker will probably have a better frequency respone than the stockers so you should get a better sound.
Actually this came about since at some point I will probably upgrade but I found some 6.5's that I forgot I had from about 9 years ago PPI 65.1 2 ways and they run at 4 ohms.  Actually changed them out today and they do sound better but the sound level is decreased a bit.  Trade off but they do sound a heck of alot better with more kick than the stockers.

As long as you don't switch to a lower impedance you're good. I know quite a few people who have killed their tube guitar amps by learning that lesson the hard way.

And the stock speakers are two ohms? Kinda an odd impedance. I'm used to most speakers being either 4, 8, or 16 ohms.

That's what the sticker on the back of the speaker stated as well as a manufacture date for the speaker.
Looks like I need to rest the date on the Camera. Lol

I didnt mean it that way 238.
I was kind of scratching my head also and thinking that GM actually did something for the better.  Now I wonder what the other speakers are rated.

Tazz  what is the rating on the Magnets. I had or still have a pair of Polk 4ohm w/10oz magnets and they sound great.I don't think you can get Polk any more though unless a shop has some laying around.

One more question about the door speaker.    Do I have to remove the door panel to remove the speaker cover ?   I Kicked the speaker grill getting out and it doesn't look good.   I'm hoping that it just pops off. THANKS.

Yes you have to remove the door panel. The weird thing about our cars is the door speakers and the tweeters are on separate feeds from the amp. If you want to get a set of matched component speakers (doors and tweeters) you will need a bi-ampable or bi-wire crossover. I know MB Quart makes some, I am sure there are others. These are the ones I am upgrading my already upgraded JBL to.

MB Quart's new 2008 Premium speakers follow the tradition of their legendary predecessors.
Tweeters can be flush, surface or angle mounted separately, or coaxial mounted in the center of the speaker.
Speaker Size: 6-1/2"
Design 2-way Component System
Tweeter Design Cone
Tweeter Composition Titanium
Woofer Composition Polypropylene
Woofer Surround Rubber
Sensitivity: 87 dB
Frequency Response: 38 - 32000 Hz
RMS Power Handling: 70 watts
Peak Power Handling: 140 watts
Impedance: 4 ohms
Top Mount Depth: 2-1/2"
Cutout Dimensions: 5-5/8"
1.5" Titanium "Widesphere" tweeters with neodymium magnets
Magnet system with silver lacquered specially designed metal cover for additional cooling and protection
Connection terminals gold-plated allowing for the best possible signal transfer
Premium Performance-crossovers with new and unique FleXX Mount system for limitless mounting possibilities
Three-level tweeter attenuator with rotary switch (0, 1, 3, 5 dB)
Bi-wiring and bi-amping capable
Crossover filter: (2900 Hz, 6/12 dB/octave)
1" Voice coil
List price is $509 for the set but you can get them for about $170. If you don't spend at least $100 on the new speakers keep the factory ones, they are not that bad.
