DeLorean Motor Company Contemplating Building Pontiac Solstice
« on: October 06, 2009, 11:42:24 PM »
The DeLorean Motor Company is a brand without a car and the Pontiac Solstice is a car without a brand. That leaves the company wondering: if John DeLorean were still alive, would he try to save Pontiac? Or one Pontiac?

Nice idea, love to see the car live on.

Quote
As we all know, the folding of both Pontiac and Saturn has left the small RWD platform without a home. It also left GM's Wilmington, Delaware plant without a purpose. The new DeLorean Motor Company, which we toured last summer, is currently the main keeper of the DeLorean flame and up-keeper of the world's fleet of DeLoreans. They're also producing a small series of upgraded second generation cars. Could they also carry forward the spirit of a company enriched by John DeLorean's vigor and genius?

"JZD always said that the best memories of his automotive career were at Pontiac, and that connection between JZD and Pontiac is probably one of the better known associations among car enthusiasts," said James Espey, Vice President of the DeLorean Motor Company.

The company has released the above drawings and acquired a Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe for evaluation. DMC also says they're excited about the prospect of "putting several hundred people back to work" in Wilmington, though it's unclear at how much capital it would take to acquire the plant and the source of funding for such an endeavor.

Until we get more information we're just going to sit back and enjoy the prospect of GM's Kappa platform getting a second life.

Are you kidding me?  The relationship is sure there.  As we all know way back when we began first dating, it takes a relationshiip to build a fire and eventually a partner!  This could really happen folks.  At least it has a chance, and if it does I plan on getting with some of my buddies and getting stinking drunk  in celebration just like back in the school and fraternity days.  If Pontiac and the Wilmington plant are purchased history does move forward.  The artist illustrations are hot!  All I can say is SWEET!!!!!!!!!!

There could be more than rumor to this, not saying for sure, but I know some people who turned down the early retirement, the buyout, and or transfer to another facility because there was talk that the plant was going to be leased by an outsider to build the Kappa using existing workers.

I'm sure there are a million kinks to work through to make this happen.

I went onto the DL site, and sent them the following e-mail.  Don't know that it will do any good, but it can't hurt!

Dear Sirs:

I am the owner of a 2007 Solstice GXP, SCCA member, and Global Moderator of the Kappa Performance message board, an online community of performance-oriented Solstice and Sky enthusiasts. All of us in the Kappa community were distressed beyond words to learn of the closure of the Wilmington DE Kappa plant, and GM's abandonment of this innovative marque. We were heartened beyond measure to hear rumors and rumblings of your companies possible interest in reviving the Kappa platform.

The Kappa is the right car at exactly the right time. As many of us who have prepared our GXPs and Redlines for competition and high performance street driving can attest, the forced induction 2.0 LNF EcoTec direct cylinder injected, variable valve timing engine brings together state of the art efficiency and potential for extraordinary performance in one package.  It produces the highest hp per cubic inch of displacement of any production motor ever offerred by a US car maker.

Mated to a state of the art hydroformed chassis, with double wishbone coilover suspension, and decent brakes, lighter wheels and good tires, the handling qualities of the car equals or exceeds many far more expensive marques, including the Porsche Boxter.  There is a robust aftermarket of talented engineers and fabricators who have developed components that further improve the Kappa's already credible box stock handling characteristics, and most Kappa owners I know enjoy customizing their vehicles to make them suit their individual requirements.

The elegant, sexy design of the bodywork of the Sol is a modern refined expression of the classic roadster, and the short-lived Coupe (upon which your company is considering building) further refined those design cues. But the Kappa, like the DeLorean of yore, is a uniquely American expression of those classics.

In short, this is a niche brand and platform with thousands of passionate enthusiasts.  The Sol never got a fair shake from the automotive press, nor enough time to shake out a few kinks that can be expected from the way it was designed and engineered by GM.

The Wilmington plant is a state of the art facility, and, as many of us know from visits to what we call "Mecca," its workforce is dedicated and skillful. They are as proud to build Kappas as we are to drive them.

If you proceed and build the coupe we have seen in the press, I can pledge personally to put a deposit on one, assuming you do not change the price point drastically.

An affordable, high performance, efficient and beautiful American sports car like the Kappa is not available from anyone else.  This is a great oppoprtunity for the rebirth of DeLorean marque.

Seize the day!

I actually sold DeLoreans in the 80's. Had one as a demo for a couple months. "Quirky" is not a good enough word to describe it. One can only pray that (if DMC gets the Kappa) DMC does NOT build Kappas to the same standard as DeLoreans were built. You would NOT like the results. With the future of the existing LNF engine in doubt, what would they do for an engine? How would they be able to establish all the links to the many vendors? Oh, don't expect the price of a "continuation" Kappa to start with a 3, or even a 4.

I hate to rain on the parade and would love to see Kappas continue in production.  But, if this happens, I would bet it would relieve GM of their obligation to provide parts for our cars.  Will this effort be viable?  That is a multi-million dollar question having to do as much with business practices and the economy as having a good product.  If this happens and they fail, we could lose our parts supplier.

God Bless you Ben L for sending the e-mail!  I to would put down a deposit for a Coupe, even though we really don't need it because we own three vehicles.  But, I would be proud to own a new Coupe from DeLorean Motor Company, the new potential owner of the Pontiac Solstice GXP. I am a Pontiac man and formerly owned a new 1995 Pontiac Firebird Formula that I totalled, but still have the original sticker, and before that a new 1989 Gramd AM LE 2dr Coupe, loved that car, $13,039.00, and the sticker which I still have.  Yes, I am a Pontiac MAN, and would be proud to see the brand continue under new ownership!  If the name changes so be it.  To me it will still be a Pontiac!  DeLorean Motor Company, please make the move, we will support you!

Not much of a brand to work with. John DeLorean went to his grave with a bad rap, tried to use coke smuggling to keep the company afloat. Surprised the name still exists.

The original DeLorean was a piece of underpowered crap, outside of its fame for the movie it was just another failed venture in automotive history, much like the Bricklin.

He was a big promoter of the Chevy Vega, another little bit of  body style sitting on a lousy powertrain, rust prone.

No I think this might hurt the Sol/Sky if they got a hold of it, perpetuate the bad things that writers say today.

I will say he had good taste in women, anyone remember Cristina Ferrare? Hot !

Huh??

I totally don't get how keeping the Wilmington plant going and continuing production of the basic Kappa chassis and powertrain (no matter what skin they wrap it in) will be a bad thing.

No business play other than a turn key acquisition, keeping the basic platform intact, but perhaps futzing with the bodywork and hopefully, interior fit and finish, makes economic sense.  There is a massive product engineering and a state of the art plant investment ripe for the picking for peanuts that would otherwise be lost forever.

Plus, as you point out, "he" is dead, and why should we assume that the company is now run by a bunch of fake-Arab bribin,' coke snortin' cowboys?  Also, you can dog him if you want, but John D. was at one time, the real thing, a cohort of Smokey Yunick and other racing royalty.  And yeah, he had the hot girlfriends to prove it.

So what you are saying is that it would better to let the Kappa die than having a US company try to make a go of it?

I guess I am more of a glass half full guy on this one. . . .

Actually, I think John DeLorean was a victim of himself. He did great things at GM. Unfortunately, he had to great a need to be famous and came up with the DMC-12. It was actually a pretty neat car, but it had a LOT of flaws. Most of the problems were simply a function a cost containment so a lot of final development never happened. The first 700 units were just awful from a quality standpoint. From that point until the last 500-800 units they were fairly reliable. They were nearly indisputable in an accident (two I sold were hit by other cars, and should have folded like a cardboard suitcase, but instead saved their drivers lives). If you think you get stares in a Kappa, tool around in a DMC-12. CRAZY. The RPV V6 ws not the best choice and the hand laid wiring harnesses that were buried deep in the structure were both problematic. The suspensions could not be adjusted for camber or caster AT ALL, just toe in/out. But when they ran right, they were truly fun cars.

Let us not forget that he did bring us great Pontiacs, the GTO and the 1st gen. Firebird.

A BUNCH. Property, building equipment - 9 figures worth, but much less a distressed merchandise. A lot will depend if GM actually WANTS the Kappa to continue, even in someone elses  hands.

I went to the good bye meet up at the factory and I have to say, the way they dismantled the plant I am pretty sure they were making certain nobody would buy the kappa

I was very surprised because the very first thing I wondered was why they didn't put the model up for sale, I was certain someone would buy it as a niche auto
