What about a Turbo Diesel?
« on: November 23, 2009, 01:32:57 AM »
Looking for some answers from people that know more than I do (I know, open door...).

Here is what I am thinking:

What about a twin turbo 6 cyl diesel?  One like the 3 series BMW uses.  Clean diesel, 44 mpg, 300 hp stock and crazy tq numbers....  There seems to be plenty of space under the hood of the Sol / Sky (V8's drop right in).  I have been more and more interested in the possibilities of High performance diesels over the last few years and have been thinking of a project car to build if I win the lottery.  Clean diesel seems like a way to make plenty of power while still helping mother earth a little bit.  Anybody know what challenges might be faced in a project like this?

Add a couple of pounds of boost to a 2.4 and you'll be there in gas mileage. And you'll have less of the particals of the diesel. Diesel costs here are closing in on .40 cents more for diesel compared to premium fuel prices.

Can't imagine what a modern day twin turbo diesel weighs when our Ecotec is round 350 lbs with clutch assembly. Let alone having to up shift every 3,000 rpms!

Now if you were plan on towing a trailer or a boat most of the time that would get the looks!  :)

How did they do in the American LeMans series or what ever they are calling those races now?

Straight 6 DOHC 24V Diesel. 2000-on.   132kg 291lbs

This isn't the exact engine from BMW that they use now, but this is a straight 6, 3.0 litre turbo diesel engine, weight 291 pounds (found on a BMW forum, so I am not promising it is correct) which is probably engine only, not tranny / clutch assy.

That seems fairly light!  A modern diesel might be a bit heavier with the urea burner, but only a few pounds.  Oh, and I rechecked the specs- 265 HP and 425 ft pounds!  I know a 2.4L can achieve the MPG, but there is no way it can get that much power AND achieve the MPG.  The best part is, max tq is reached at 1300 rpm.

I am not here looking to gloat about the BMW engine, just wondering what are the possibilities?

I would go for BMW 3.0L bi-turbo gas engine, that one from 335i, 135i or Z4 35i, 306hp and 400 Nm tq at 2000 rpm. These are stock numbers, with some supportive mods and a tune you have 400hp.

I hate diesels too much torque (i don't tow) and low power.
