So today I had a new windshield installed due to a stone chip directly in front of me.  I left the shop with the top down, pulled into work and parked the car, nothing unusual.  When I left work (top up now, brr) I noticed that the engine seemed louder than normal.  The sound would best be described as a ticking noise, and is directly related in both frequency and volume to the engine revs.  I took it by a parts store here, since the dealer's already closed (and I am out of OEM warranty, into my extended with 100 dollar deductible) and the guy there said it sounded like valve ticking, and told me to have it adjusted next time I had the car in for work.  My questions are: does this sound reasonable?  I know the noise is actually easier to hear in the cabin than outside, and I very rarely get out of the car with it running. If this is just the normal sound of the engine, I'm guessing I'll find a leak with the windshield soon that's making it more noticeable(which I'll have the glass company fix, no big deal).  The other question would be, if this is valve ticking, is it something I can adjust at home? He said "they just need to be torqued down", I assume that to mean the ... my engine terminology is probably off, but retainers?  I have a torque wrench, and reasonable mechanical skill.

Since it is an 06 it isn't the high pressure fuel pump found on the GXP.  It could be a valve ticking, when did you change oil last, and have you checked it?

Oil was changed a week or two ago, and I checked it, it's fine.  I should mention the car only has 18k miles on it.

Gm has a notice out that carbon build up can cause valves to stick on this engine.  I would  put a can of fuel injector cleaner in the tank and they say this will take care of it.  To the best of my knowledge valve lash cannot be adjusted on this engine.  It is also possible that one of the hydraulic lifters [ called posts] is bad.  There is not a bolt that can be tightened on the rocker arm [ called a follower]  The rocker arm are simply placed on the valve stem and post [lifter] and held in place by the camshaft. P.S It might take 2-3 days for the injector cleaner to work.  Keep us posted Gray Wolf

Also depending on if it is outside temp dependent, look into what weight of oil you have been using. HLA's (Hydraulic Lash Adjusters) have a small little hole in the side of them that pressurized oil goes in to keep them pumped up and take up the valve lash automatically. We have experience with these not being able to keep pressure in them at start up if the oil weight is a little high or it is really cold. I read in your previous post that the car was fine until you parked it and returned and noticed the problem when it was cold later.

I've been having this same problem after getting my windshield replaced on Saturday. Car was fine that morning when I drove it and after they replaced it the ticking was incredibly loud. I even changed the oil and filter on Monday to no effect, and also put in some injector cleaner. It definitely hasn't been this loud before and I have 31,000 miles on the car.

It is the high pressure fuel pump located in the cowl under the hood.  I don't remember exactly what they do wrong when they replace the windshield, but it allows the sound to travel into the cockpit.  Could be something as simple as insolation they didn't replace to they installed the windshield incorrectly.

I figured it was the high pressure pump. I have one of the upgraded insulators for it that I'm going to install to see if it makes a difference and if not looks like Safelite will be getting a call back.

I know the answer guys. I had the same thing happen to me on my 07 GXP. When they replaced my window they did not seal the window properly. I heard sounds from my turbo that resembled a chainsaw cutting into metal. I seriously pulled over at one point thinking the car was going to blow. :) It ended up being the windshield all along.  They did not seal the window very well at the bottom. Therefore, I heard all sorts of noises. Get them to redo the windshield and all is well. The place that did mine actually added some type of foam gasket around the windshield. Made a huge difference.
