Wester's with AUTOMATIC 2.0T
« on: March 03, 2010, 03:06:23 PM »
All,

Looking for others with Wester's tune and automatic tranny in GXP / RL.

Here is what is going on.  Got an ECM tuned by Lyndon.  Not sure of the "name" of the tune, but it was just done a month or two ago.

Since the tune, as everyone does, I have blown off my IC pipes, and subsequently replaced all 6 worm clamps with DDM's magic clamps.  That was an expected issue and has been taken care of I think.  However, when the clamps were holding, I found the car to not know what gear to be in, mostly on the freeway around 55-60 MPH, right around the torque converter lock up point I think.  The throttle would just be kind of dead.  I would push it 10-20% and get nothing.  Minimal acceleration at best and virtually no change in RPM.  It FELT like the tranny should kick down, but wouldn't.

Here is my theory, then please tell me yours if you have one:
With all the power the car has now with the tune, the TQ is reading acceptable to the ECM and NOT kicking the tranny down into the next gear like it normally would?  If I press harder it does get up and go, and I mean GO.  That easy passing power is gone.  It's stay behind granny or blow past her in a cloud of smoke and dust.

I have noticed it on side roads as well, but not regular enough that I can put my finger on it, I just know when it happens.
I am hopefull that others have had similar and there may be a fix for it?

Could this be something else?

Thanks in advance for the help and advice.  A special thanks to KWhale in advance for hijacking this thread. (do I really need to use his silly icon here?)  ok, here it is.... :kwh:

So, are you saying that Gentleman Jack should start imbibing tranny fluid? You are the racing expert, what weight would you suggest?  :idk:

I heard GM Roadster says they can tune the autos. I am not sure how legit that is. There are other GM auto trannys that are extremely easy to tune. Ours is not one of them it seems.

I am interested in what the resolve to this is as well. I haven't done a tune yet on mine but I have a spare ECM here to do it.
Just trying to do my part...

Anybody got an automatic that is anywhere near Tilley Alberta?  I have been talking with Mr. Wester about this issue and his biggest hold up right now in cracking the TCM for the automatics is having one to play with.  He indicated that he would only need the car for a few days.  I know, that is a long time to go without your car, but it's for the greater good.
If anyone is willing, I will make an offer to help pay for the tune from Westers if you don't already have one since this is going to benefit me greatly and I am simply too far away from Tilley to get it done myself.  PLEASE????????

Chuckdoc are you thinking of driving up there. I just ordered a spare ECM. If you don't go I may go up in April before the mod meet if you and GJ are willing to pay for half the tune. That would help pay for my gas.

GJ - Sorry but the only 2 members here in the Alberta area are SlyNick and me.  Nick has a non-GXP, and I think hers is also a manual.  Mine is a GXP, but manual.  I would donate my car if I could, but I already have the Westers tune and lovin it in manual mode. :drive:

I don't suppose you have access to, or own HPTuners???  I did not have it myself, but one day the dealer whacked my tune by trying to be helpful (long story).  Rather then drive the 5 hours down south to Tilley, I bought HPTuners and had Lyndon send me my tune so I could reinstall it myself.  IF you had HPTuners, you could do some logging for Lyndon that would probably help him solve your issues.  The down side, I paid around $400US for the software (can't remember exactly).  The upside, it's an awesome tool that you had no intention of buying!

Squirrel !!!!!

That was my hi-jack of your thread.  Man it's hard on a guy when he stays on topic for the entire post!  :D

I was just joking, I do have a Westers tune, a GM tune and a Westers tune of the GM tune.  Yikes is that confusing!  I removed the Westers tune and only have the GM tune now.

Best of all was the westers tune before the GM tune.  Sorry I got the GM one.  But hey, I still love the car, just miss the raw power.

Ive got HPtuners and have a 07 GXP automatic with GMPP tune and my warranty is about up.  Does anyone know exactly what Lyndon will need as far as a scanned file to make his tune of the GMPP tune work correctly or does he actually need the car?  I want to get his tune but Im not one to spend $$ and them have to email tunes back and forth to get it right.  Basically I want it right the first time so I can enjoy.  Not opposed to maybe one extra email to get it nailed down but I really want to be happy with what I get and not say wish I would have waited or got something different because of little bugs in the tune.

Tazz, let Joe chime in here.  I tested several Westers tune of my GMPP tune.  Joe drove the car (because after 100 mph on winding roads, I chicken out and Joe does not.  I sat in passenger seat with HP tuners recording everything from WOT to anything else you can imagine.

The last tune we tested had great power, we could not do a 0 to 60 time because we spun tires for a significant amount of time every time we took off.  (bad tires? lots of torque?), each time we sent files off to Lyndon.  1st tune had lots of knock retard, last one was much better and I loved the power, but randomly car went into limp mode and threw a code that indicated o2 sensors or turbo sensors.  It happened every couple of weeks, but after the car was off for 5 min, normal power returned.

Then the info came out about the engine that blew and warnings about going over 300 hp..  We took the tune off the car and went back to the original GMPP tune and no codes or problems for the past 10,000 miles.

Now the real problem is I MISS THE POWER.  I MEAN I REALLY MISS THE POWER.  I was thinking of putting the tune back on but also getting Lyndon to maybe reduce the power a little bit.

As far as the torque converter, this is done to transfer more of this power to the wheels but I do not see how you could get the car to hook up with the ground with lots more power, unless you changed the tires.

Now you know all that is known with the Westers tune of the GMPP tune.

Now for those with an automatic and no GMPP tune.  I also was one of the testers of this and he has a perfect tune that supplies more power than you could ever want, no codes and lots of fun.  Get it!  I miss it!  Only would need more power if you raced.

I have an Auto with the GMPP tune. I have applied for a passport. If it gets here in time I plan on being at Westers April 21 and let him play with my car and see if he can get it right. It will be a nice trip. Then I plan on leaving there and driving to the Mod Meet. I want him to dyno the car before and after and maybe as Chuckdoc said maybe not quite as much power.

Dick, let me be clear.  The most power is from the Westers tune of the factory GXP tune.  Next is the Westers tune of the GMPP tune and least is the GMPP tune.  Actually least is from stock GXP.

Clear now?

I hope we get a good tune out of your trip.  If it works out, I will have Joe name the tune after you.  It would be great cause I have a fuse cover that says tuned by Westers and it is now a fib.

I might just have to buy an automatic so I can write the following in my signature:

Dick, if you plan on going to Westers in April, of THIS year, I suggest you make an appointment now!!!  I went in the end of April and if I had not booked in February, I probably would have been SOL.

Remember, you are going to the land of only 6 good months of driving and everyone takes their cars out for tunes etc at the end of March.

DickW,

The tune of the engine is not the tough part right now if what I'm feeling when I drive is really the tranny giving me trouble.  Lyndon would need you car for a few DAYS, not hours to try to lock down the TCM tune.  He has what seems to be a pretty amazing tune for the engine, and at this point, I am the only one I know of that has had problems with it.  Lyndon said more could be done to "perfect" the package (my words, not his) it he could tune the TCM as well. (paraphrasing)

As for HP Tuners:  anybody have one with credits for an 07 auto GXP that might be willing to ship it to San Diego for a bit of time and then sent back in same condition with a special gift in the box?  Oh, yeah, and also be available to instruct a first timer on data logging?

Thanks,

GJ
