I want to swap an automatic transmission into my sky. Can some one tell
me if this is possible and what parts I would need

Thats funny but I rather have a manual.  Shame you have a redline as I have a gxp.

As to swapping the transmission, this is not impossible but it would be cheaper to sell and buy another even with taking a multi thousand dollar loss.

So many things would have to be replaced including ECM, TCM, wiring harness, transmission, host of sensors

So there are a lot of different sensors on the engine? Or transmission? I'm sure I could make my own harness as long as I can find the pigtails. I know here is a transmission contol Boyle I assume it goes on the gm can bus? Maybe I should find some one with an auto and see if thy would do a swap with me.
Is the auto he same one in the Colorado? I am very serious about this swap and I'm not trading cars or selling mine.

I don't know if the engine would get along with this transmission, but if you are going to go auto, I would get the 6L80e transmission. It's much more tuneable and supports rev matching down shifts.  You could put aftermarket paddle shifters in, which would be great fun

Points to ponder:

5L40E transmissions have been used worldwide in numerous vehicles.

Holden produced a model around 2003+/- with V6, 5L40E & paddle shifters.

There is a company that sells a tunable module that plugs directly into the transmission’s 20 way connector thus eliminating the TCM . The company also states that it is the consumers’ responsibility to deal with any codes or lights set after disconnecting TCM cable.  This module sells for about $1,000.

I believe that when Mallett transplanted a V8 into an automatic car, they reused the original transmission.

I've seen that thing, pretty cool, but I doubt it would do rev matching, which might not matter to the OP. But it's the only reason I'd buy an auto

I don't think anyone disputes that.  The OP is looking to maintain the same vehicle, be it for sentimental reasons or just the challenge of the swap, I'm not sure.  Either way, the OP indicated they WILL keep the original car and find a way to get this done.

Chuckdoc- I would think when it comes to tranny, the SOL / SKY differences are minimal and could be overcome fairly easily.  You two seem like a good match.

Have you made any progress?  The tranny is resonably popular as another poster has already indicated.  Your best match would be finding someone like Chuckdoc to do a swap with.  Would you be covering all the costs for the swaps?  You may want to add a bit of info as to time line and scope of project (if it is more than just swapping tranny)  Let us know, we'd love to help but please take the time to photodocument the swap as it goes I for one would love to see the pics!

Didn't somebody already figure out that the (ECM) is changeable in same year Sol's and Sky's. Blocks match , you have to change out bell-housings with all related parts,pedels. I know I took standard trans off of my 400 pontiac and put an auto But that didn't have all the computer stuff back then. If you want it bad Enough Nothing is Impossible .There are transmission Shops that know just what to do. Mainly Speed Shops

I was looking at the 6L80e  for a other car upgrade. Rather expensive to buy. Best price i found 4600$(no core) pluss another K for the controler. Anyone know of a better price seems high?

If the prices are correct then it would be best to get an auto sol by alot.  These are larger too i think, they even bolt up too a LNF? The first gear is sick 4,0 .

No Way, I love sky people but do not like the look of the sky.  Hate it in fact.  I am old and more like the classic curves of a fine car or lady.  Not the young edgy look of the sky.

Saw this thread...still interested in swapping for an auto?  I want a manual and who knows, maybe we could just do a straight swap.  I'm just concerned about all the sensors, wires, etc.  I wouldn't know where to start...
