Which backup camera?
« on: April 05, 2010, 04:50:59 PM »
I was hoping to get some input as to what others are using for backup cameras on their aftermarket head units. I am looking at the Boyo VTL375 as I want something that doesn't advertise the fact that I have the capability in the car.

Does anyone have anything to say either pro or con regarding the backup camera their head unit is using?

People don't know I have the VLT400 until I point it out.

I have a Boyo also, don't remember the model number off hand.  Joe installed it last Feb/Mar.  Unfortunately, right now, it isn't working.  Will have Joe check it out at the mod meet.

Whip, if you ever had your battery off or the radio reset, you have to turn it back on in the settings.  Check your user manual for how to.

I noticed on my father's car (factory option) that his back up camera is aimed far lower than I thought it would be, and works very well that way.  I was thinking if you got a camera small enough, which is quite easy, I bet you could fit it in the lighting opening for the rear license plate.  You'd probably have to widen the opening so the light and the camera could be mounted effectively.  But otherwise, I think it'd be a pretty stealth install.

I was also thinking it'd be pretty slick to punch out the Saturn emblem, put a tinted window into it, and a camera behind that.  But a camera mounted as such would probably be more of a rear view mirror type view then a back up camera view.

Joe/John, thanks for the info.  My battery did die over the winter so I'll check the manual and reset the camera info in the Kenwood.

I have the pioneer unit and it works fine, it came free with my stereo package.  I think it is a very stealthy install.  The camera is the small black cube under the pontiac arrowhead.

Running the wires through the license light hole worked out fine.  And it's tacked on behind the plate so the would be thief, would have to remove the plate first in order to get to the camera.

Bob, do you plan on having it installed prior to the meet?  If so give me a call and I can give you some tips.

Joe, the head unit that I want to get I don't think is going to be available before the meet as I still am looking at the Kenwood DNX9960. I may get the rest of the stuff and install it without the deck. I would love to get it all done but without the deck it'll be a little tough.  :D
