Tune issues
« on: May 21, 2010, 06:19:25 PM »
I need help. Spent too much money and time on the mod meet with failure to show. As you knwo I already had the GMPP tune with the new sensors. At the meet I added the Solo exhaust tune with high flow cat, DDM charge tubes and K&N filter and the Westers Race tune.
Results?
 :banghead:
A car that likes to shoot right to 25psi if spirited on the gas pedal, downside it will ping like a  :censor:, and when I mean ping I mean bad. Another symptom is smoking. Initially thought to have been the new exhaust burning off, even it never driven hard car will eradically start smoking at idle for 5-6 seconds.
I thought I did my homework by taking my car to the next level but  :violin:

Ideas anyone?

Something is definately wrong.  I have gmpp tune and westers
tune of the gmpp tune, hi flo cat, solo exhaust but no k and n
filter.  No pings.  You are using hi octane gas right?

My car is now running perfect (knock on wood)

need to make sure you have correct westers for your car

or problem with k and n are pretty common if u have
cleaned and oiled it.

Ping is bad

Chuck you are seeing 25psi? If so you are running 91/93as well.  Just my guess here, but if you are running  25 psi that puts the Cr at what around 23.5? Seems withthat much boost you must run racing fuel. I would not think there is enough timing adjust to make it not knock? You at a very high elevation?

At that other site, i read once a simular issue and did not they come to find out there issue was time chain guide was wore out. <just something i remember reading.

Is that "race" tune set for 91 and 25psi?  The term race and street gas just dont make sense to me, if its a "race" seems you need raceFuel.

I have the solo cat and mach shorty Gm tune, stock air and IC. I tunned the waste gate as well(i think that put me in the knock zone). I was getting the knock, i am at 300ft in the heat of hell summer time 115-125 i see 20-23psi, winter i see 18-20.  I put a full tank of sunoco 100uleaded just to see if that worked, like a charm car pulls like a bat out of hell(i also unpluged the battery when i did this to get a fresh start. Then i started backing off the 100 to 50/50 no pingknock, even went down to 25/75 no ping but less power. I tried all those BS octain boosters waist of money. i run 50/50 now all the time runs like a top.  but we have these pumps with sunoco and other brands all over town here, just cost like you are in the EU.

If i had a "racetune" i think it would need at least 100unleaded, just my guess.

Have you tried some 100+octain fuel, I would and see if that does it

I have Westers "race" tune over factory calibration among catless solo dp and Dejon IC. I spike 26psi (read on parallel sensor boost gauge) and I run 98 octane gas which is comparable with your 93 octane.

Ping means knock, right? I have 3 degrees of knock only if I go WOT in high gears from 2000-2500rpm, other than that no knock.
Lately I re-gapped my sparks plugs at .030" as Lyndon suggested.

Mac: can you please do a separate topic about water/meth with your details? Me and some other would love a thread about that.

Running 93, K&N was right out of the box not re-oiled. WOuld a new filter cause issues? Chuck, you keep the same plugs or did you run colder? Think Lyndon gave me a 100+ octane tune on accident?

Anyone have HPtuners 09 license in No. VA care to take a crack at this?

Your actually hearing it PING?  That's bad!!
If your actually just seeing what the ECM is pulling like 3-4* to prevent knock then it not so bad at all.  Still not the best since your not getting max power but not hurting anything.
Looking at my Wester's GMPP tune as well as the stock & GMPP tunes there what seems to be 3 levels of knock retard.  One is tip in and it's from what I gather automatic and just deducts 1-3* depending on the RPM at the touch of the throttle from the master max timing table for that load.  Then theres a Dynamic knock retard of 8* which is the Max knock retard based on load dynamics and a Max Knock retard of 12* depending on RPM.  So in theory you have 12* of knock retard before you will hear audible knock on a continuous basis and if that's happening your pretty much destroying your pistons and rings.
The smoking could be one of the rings that beat up bad and letting oil past into combustion causing it to burn oil that's a guess though.
When i first got my Wester's tune I did not adjust my WG properly and I did get light Audiable knock one time and when I heard it I backed off quick.  I email Lyndon on the proper procedure and now there's no audible ping but the ECM will pull 2* of timing at times if needed but no audible knock.

The K&N filter from what Ive heard does skew the fuel trims by about 6% but that should be within the tolerance of the tune.

Duck1313,

It's not sounding good.  Have you been having the issues since the mod meet or did they set in after XX miles?  Done anything else since then?  Oil change? Service?  Anything?  Can you put your stock tune back in and see if anything changes?

Duc, they don't need a license to scan.  Did you ever modify the waste gate rod?  Next weekend we can get together.  Sending a PM

Since I have had a similar issue in the past (No smoke though)...I know that adding colder NGK plugs with either a .030 or .028 gap made a huge improvement. I have my gap at .028.

Have you cleared the codes or disconnect the battery for 5 mins. yet Duck?

Also, do we 2.0 turbo owners need to be concerned with cleaning our throttle bodies?
