Sorry if this is a stupid question. Could anyone please tell me what material our hoods are made out of?

I think it's hydroformed steel.

Thanks, my body shop guy says as long as it's steel he can make the hood look perfect, rather than waiting 3 weeks for another one to come in damaged.

That's correct.
All the body panels use the Hydroformed process.

Well, she's got a Sky, so while they might all use the hydroform process, they're not all steel. (I'm also not sure how the Sky fenders are formed...)

Hood truck and the whole side panel from the rocker all the way to the back fender wheel are all steel.
Not exactly sure what process the side front fenders use on the Solstice to stamp the fenders but if everyother outer steel body panel uses the hydroformed stamping process then I assume the fenders use the same process at least in the case of the Sol.

Thanks guys! He just wanted to know if it was steel or aluminum. If it's steel he can fix it, if it was aluminum he couldn't.

Shiny,

Why don't you get an aftermarket hood with your insurance cash?  You could lose a little weight up front and look really cool to boot!

GJ

by the way, I am talking about the car, not you, for all those that might look to twist my words... you know, because I would never do that to anyone  :)

I was actually looking into that last night. I'm not really sure there are too many around. I hear Norm has one but I don't think I've ever seen a picture of it. I was also looking at the RK Sport hood but truthfully I'm just not feeling it. I really love the lines on the Sky exactly as they are. I also happen to love the chrome grills (I know some people hate those), which the RK Sport does not have.

My opinion is it might make the car look too bulky (for my taste). Will talk to the body shop today. I am picking my car up so I can at least have her for the weekend. I have a few days to decide.

After further review (I'm a female I change my mind all the time ;) ) I am starting to really like the look of the RKsport hood. (That and it's $340 less than GM [if you don't include shipping]) I didn't like the ones they have in all the ads, way over done for my taste; however, I found some old pictures on the Sky forum and I think it looks kind of badass!

What do you guys think?  And, does anyone know how much work is needed to get these ready for install.? Are there a lot of fitment issues?

Any feedback on this matter is appreciated, so I can let the body shop know what to expect :)

No idea about the fitment...

Personally, I would like the opening to be closer down near the grill, for looks.  I don't know how it functions and that may be why it is where it is.  I do agree with you that this one is much less "overdone" than some of the others, and cheaper too!  How much is GM charging you for a new hood?  You could have a custom hood made just for you from the sounds of it.

GM wants $980 for the hood, but there are no shipping charges.

There is a company in NY selling the RK hood for $640 + $125 shipping.

SHiNY,

I just looked at the RK on ebay that SOB posted.  I don't know if it is different from the one on the white sky you posted, but I like the look of it.  from different angles it is subtle, but different than stock.  I like it.

Would you get a different color for the center like in the pic or keep it all silver?  I'm guessing silver, but thought I'd ask.  I think that is the route I would take.  Less money, less weight...

I asked that same question before I saw the solid white. I was looking on line with Mike (the body shop guy) and we were discussing my options. He said you could always paint it silver and if you didn't like it you could paint in the black. I said "no, you can paint it black". He laughed and said not a big deal, it would just take some wet sanding and he could paint the black if I wanted. Then I was thinking a red pinstripe down the side to separate the silver and black and pull out the red in the seats as I have black/red seats.

Not sure, but after looking at prices and the solid white one, I'm thinking I might just like the RK hood but leave it solid silver. Flashy yet understated.

See, now we're going to need clarification. I was thinking that was all about me ('cause in my world it's all about me :) ). Reed swears this was totally about him. And now SA thinks it's all about him!  Sheesh, we can't all be flashy and understated can we?
