No boost reading (0 PSI) and code P0106
« on: July 09, 2010, 01:25:30 PM »
Yesterday I discovered I was getting a solid 0 PSI boost display on the DIC, but the car seemed to run and accelerate fine.  I thought it might be "one of those things" but it remained over a couple of engine off cycles, so today I plugged in my cheap Sears OBD reader and saw it had thrown a P0106 code.

So looked under the hood and found the intake hose bulging and not properly seated in the (T-bolt) clamp at the rear of the driver-side intake tube. So I loosened the clamp, reseated the hose and tightened again.  Cleared the code and drove it - all now seems fine.

Bottom line, I must not have tightened the clamp properly when I replaced the factory clamps - I was very wary of over-tightening in case I crushed the intake tube.  Anyone give me an idea of how tight is 'enough'?

It's about a 2-grunt with a 1/4" drive.  Slightly less than a grunt if you're using 3/8" drive (well, depending on how long your ratchet handle is)

Thanks, but I'd prefer if we kept my ratchet handle out of this!

between 6 and 9 inch - pounds that is,   I got to stop this

Okay straight face and being serious.  Military term grunt torque.  One grunt - tighten until it is tight and then one grunt more.

Tighten it until the tube crushes or the bolt shears then back it off a quarter turn.

GJ is on his way to Hellinois so it may be some time before he chimes in.  Moby, its your turn.

Roger that ESAY, this is Moby.

I concur with everything Jiggle said in the third post after the post about the horse that got loose.

Over and out

Soup - I had the same question when I did my clamps this spring.  I went with "That seems tight enough" theory and blew off the same connection as you.  I asked and nobody new then either how tight to go, so I went with "One more turn and please God don't let this crush it".  Redid all the clamps that I originally wossied out on as well.  Cleared the code and haven't looked back!

:)

TS,

KWhale is right.  We all were a bit hesitant at first.  I have cranked mine down several times now.  I don't think there is any way we can actually crush the pipes.  The rubber will start to deform pretty good, but that should be ok.  I am still having P0101 issues and may try to tighten them up again.  I was able to break a clamp on purpose (I was testing to see how tight I could go) but it was with WAY more grunt than needed for these clamps.
