GMPP CAI What's wrong with this picture?
« on: October 16, 2010, 09:50:07 PM »
Did a swap today for a GMPP CAI and although it's installed and working well the shield that fits over the filter doesn't seem to be installed correctly. The instructions aren't very clear and it seems as though the metal cover should be able to come off easier than it does.

Have a look at the attached picture and let me know what I'm doing wrong. Sure have a lot more room under the hood than I had before.   :yay:

Should you be able to take the shield off without tools?

I've got a GMP intake, installed it myself. It was INCREDIBLY annoying to fasten those nuts that attach the splash guard. I'm afraid there's not really easy way to get at it.

Though I tightened those nuts down all the way, eventually they loosed over time and came out on their own...since I didn't feel like finding more I just took the splash guard off. Don't think it serves much purpose unless you open your hood in the rain.

I installed this one as well and yeah it was a bear to get in. Looked easy enough but to get everything lined up and sitting right was tougher than it looked.

Boy, you aren't kidding. When I did the first cold start I thought something was wrong with the car. Got out, opened the hood and checked to make sure everything was where it should be as there was a heck of a noise in there.

I see why they put the resonators on the stock air box.

A little late now, but you put it on first, then the air cleaner, then install the pipe.

Are you happy with having the cold air intake on the car or is it less than you hoped for?
Does it sound good when the engine is warmed up or is it a waste of money?

That wouldn't be any fun John! I was looking for an easy way to remove it, so when I tried to change the filter down the road, the cover was as easy as possible to remove and reinstall. Probably me just being anal as that isn't going to happen very often.

Got a few stainless steel fasteners today and when I get the water shield back for the powder coater HOPEFULLY tomorrow, I can try out a little different way to install it. I had planned on painting the shield as it was a little scratched up but my local powder coater does small as well as large items and only charged me $5 to coat it. I couldn't buy a rattle can for $5!!!

If any of our members in Canada want a powdercoater that will powdercoat anything PM me and I will give you this guys name. He'll do the heads of a few bolts for a dollar a piece. Most guys don't want those small jobs.

I really hadn't even thought about getting one until this opportunity came up. Am I happy? Yes, I like the sounds that it makes as you get to hear everything working. It's amazing the sounds that get covered up with the stock air box. It's also really nice to have all that extra room under the hood that I didn't have before as well. No regrets here flyingfish but you don't do this for the performance gains as there aren't any.

Keep in mind though that this isn't for everyone. The gentleman that I traded air boxes with didn't like the sounds that his RedLine made at all. The "turkey gobble" sound as he described it, that he heard when he took his foot off the gas was driving him crazy. He's happy now that he doesn't have to listen to that any longer and I'm happy as well.

Okay, picked up a few stainless steel bolts, nut, washers and lock washers yesterday. The attached picture shows how I'm setting up the GMPP CAI. The shield over the filter will be sandwiched between the 2 washers.

First of all I attached the bolt, nut and lock washer to the CAI with the threads of the bolt facing away from the filter. I added some blue Loctite (medium strength) to the threads to lock it in place in addition to the lock washer.

I may add a lock washer to the outside or just lock it in place with purple Loctite (low strength) if it's required and I suspect it will be.

At least now I can remove and reinstall the cover with out so much difficulty.
