How do I remove the front breather hose?
« on: October 26, 2010, 12:45:29 PM »

OK, so maybe third time's a charm.  Or maybe I'll just keep pestering enough that someone will give an intelligent answer...
I tried this question over on the "Do we need a catch can?" and the "DDM catch can" threads, but still got no info.

I've been thinking about putting in a catch can, but looking at my engine, I've no clue as to how to remove the current hose that goes from the front of the valve cover down to the intake of the turbo.  I can't even get in there to see if there's any oil in it to make a decision.  I have the fuel line hose release tool, but there's no room to get it in at either end AFAICS.

Will somebody please tell me HOW TO REMOVE THIS HOSE?

Again, for clarity, this is IBDRINKEN's photo showing his catch can and the two hoses replacing the one I want to remove:

Dynamite?  :idk:

Just kidding, the front hose on the valve cover is a little hard to get off. The easiest way to get it off is to take the other end off of the turbo, there is a single 10mm head bolt holding it there. Use a small blade screwdriver and you can pop that part off of the turbo after removing the bolt. Once that piece is off of the turbo, you can pull and twist at the same time to start to work the hose off of the valve cover. It takes a little effort to do, and this will destroy the hose, but it will work itself off. There have been a couple that we can get off by taking our time and using a small blade screwdriver to pick each of the 4 tabs holding it on. If you do that the hose can be re-used. The hose is available at the dealer if for some reason you want to replace it later.

Hope that helps,
Dave

I take it you guys are talking about "B" in this picture?

If that's the case, Dave, do you remove those hoses when sending the valve covers to the powdercoaters?

I was talking about "B". "A" can be removed with the fuel disconnect tool. The line can be left on when powdercoating, although usually the line is replaced with a new one.

Thanks,
Dave

Tomato soup, why SHOULD you get this end off to put a ctach can???
you can remove the other end (the one on the turbo) for inspection and continue the hose from that side till the occ and then back to the inlet of the turbo?
does this make any sense?

YES! THANK YOU Dave.  Really appreciate it and I take back all those nasty things that GentlemanJim was saying about you! ;)

I admit I was worried that I would have to destroy it to take it off - seems like it's likely I will.  Rats.

Makes sense, certainly to check for oil.  But it would be difficult and insecure (leak risk) to attach that 'free' bayonet end to some non-GM catch can or tube.  But it's only thanks to Dave that I even know (now) how to remove the turbo end!

Anyone got the part number of that front tube? Checked GMpartsGiant and I can't find it.

Thanks Kelu.  Unfortunately, it's not how to use the tool that is the issue.  It's the fact that for that particular hose, there's no space to get the tool in at either end.
