for any stock class scca autox'ers out there, i requested a clarification from the SAC/SEB about the legality of this specific catch can.  in the past, for these types of clarifications, i usually get just an email reply confirming/rejecting my request, but they actually addressed this one in a fastrack:

http://www.scca.com/documents/Fastrack/11/11-fastrack-march-solo.pdf

bottom line: it's legal :)

Nice! But is there any reason that they wouldn't rule that way? It afterall isn't a performance item of any sort so it doesn't give anyone an advantage.

Certainly is great news that they ruled the way they did!

you can never trust how competitors will interpret the rulebook, nor how the protest committee will rule.  trust me, i've been there (air filter rule interpretation that cascaded into a much larger issue and eventual amendment of existing rule, due to unclear language).  better safe than sorry in stock classes when you compete at the national level, i'm afraid.  contingency has a way of turning regular people into monsters, and protest committees a chance to stand on a soapbox!!

Looks like DDM might be able to get some free advertising out of that. Nice work on getting that in writing for all of us though!

I'm reading the instructions for the catch can install and I see that the check valve is removed during the install.  I thought of 2 questions (probably dumb but I'll ask anyway cus I am a PhD (see sig))...

1.  Wouldn't removing this check value impact the function of the PVC valve on the intake manifold side of the crank case when under a vacuum or pressure? So for this line that the CC is put on, instead of just sucking fresh air (at atmospheric pressure) from intake as needed, it will suck AND vent to the intake before the turbo (and with the OCC catch and oil vapour in the process) BUT thereby rendering the pcv value on the intake side redundant (as well as the breather).

2. On the stock turbo, does the breather connect before or after the compressor wheel? I guess fundamentally, is the breather meant to balance crank case pressure to atmospheric pressure or to current boost pressure? Atleast on my Hahn S20g setup the breather runs between the crank case and right before my compressor wheel (so no boost yet - atmospheric pressure after MAF sensor). See pic, ignore the lines (I was describing something else in the photo).

I still can't get it out of my head that CC's are not to correct for a faulty check value, but to catch blow by oil vapour which will still escape from the breather even with all the baffing (I've found oily film in mine). If our check valves fail (which it looks like some ppl have had that) this would call for 2 catch cans.

Forgive me if I've drummed up something already discussed, I couldn't find an answer in my searching.

pls read replies #12-16 in this thread. i had the same question.
you will find the answer in the above replies.
DDM say that 2 OCC are not needed because the breather that runs from the front part of the engine going to the stock turbo (compressor) runs through a filter integrated in the valve cover.

Thanks Arabas. If extra breathing is a benefit, why is the check value there in the first place? Just to stop oil vapor? I assumed the check value worked in conjunction with the PCV value to control where the fresh air and crank case gases vent from/too (fresh air from air intake, crank case gases to intake manifold through pcv valve).

It would make more sense to me if the catch can was installed with the check valve still in place. This pcv system is very confusing with three ports.

i don't think that installing the OCC with the check valve in place would do any harm.
i believe, that with the use of the OCC and check valve off, it is most likely that the major part of sucking and venting, would go through that hose, so the other hose (front of the engine) is still there but working less than it would with the other hose withthe check valve in place.
so, this way u make more sure to have any oil in the OCC rather than anywhere else.

one more thing to consider is that the check valve gets stuck often and we don't even notice that. so, occ in this line that has no filter or reliable check valve is safety measures taken

Right to vent positive crank case pressure into the intake manifold, correct? My question is if positive pressure is venting through the OCC to the intake instead (because of no check valve) is the pvc used anymore? I could see how venting at the intake manifold is better than at the turbo intake as then oil vapour and gases wouldn't be passing through the compressor, IC, and past the MAPs.

I'm considering ordering this product, however before I do;
1. can anyone could provide a review (glad you bought it, ease of installation, etc.)
2. does your driving style relate to needing one or not?

BTW, feel free to PM me if this isn't the appropriate thread.
TIA

3 minutes installation, glad i bought it, even if it is just a precaution measure.
i believe that driving aggressively increases the need for an OCC.
after that, i even bought an OCC for my other car.

i say, go for it, u got nothing to lose

Yeah that's why I bought it as well. Those that need an oil catch can tend to be those that run tunes but I for one aren't taking any chances. And installation? If you install it as recommended in the instructions, it's a piece of cake, and completely reversable.

Money well spent.

If you had seen the amount of oil in my intake and Turbo at the Mod Meet, you would not hesitate to buy one of these immediately.
Mr. Burns was able to pour it out of the compressor inlet.

Glad I bought a new turbo at the meet

I'm testing a new Intake on my car.
I need to install one of the lines from the OCC in it.

Does anyone know what size drill bit and tap I need for the fitting?

I think they forgot to include this when they said what size drill to use.   :poke:

Elff, I would assume that Dave at DDM would supply a 1/4" NPT fitting to install in the CAI. Yo can confirm that by measuring the outside diameter of the threads on the fitting. A 1"4 NPT thread has an outside diametwer of .540 inches.

If that's the case, you would use a 7/16" drill bit. If in doubt though, check with Dave at DDM to confirm the 1/4" NPT size as you obviously don't want to drill the wrong size hole.

When aquiring a drill bit though I would get a step drill that will drill that size as the GMPP CAI is very thin and a regular twist drill will be difficult to drill a clean hole. It's gonna want to bite.
