Code 336 Cam Sensor attention all Racers
« on: November 19, 2010, 05:42:09 PM »
Just got a code 336 Cam sensor on my lnf race engine. There are several things that may cause this problem. running out of gas and attempting to start car while empty, bad cam sensor, bad wire or connection. For you autocross, road racers and drag racers over reving your engine can cause the timing chain to skip a sprocket, break a sprocket etc. Major damage can be caused by this problem. Thankfully, I got in touch with Ricky and Dave @ Werks Racing .  Dave suggested I look at the rocker arms and make sure the timing chain and sprocket was OK.. Turns out my chain was strechted out and the sprocket needed to be replaced because of abnormal wear. I have a Bates chain tensioner spring installed on the engine which probably kept things from coming apart. Ricky said Werks has a spring tensioner for you Autocrossers and road racers . Please note I often hit 7,300 Rpm in time attack including 3rd gear for long periods of time. Plan to still hit 7.200 in 1st and 2nd,less in 3.4 .5

Is it also called the Cam Shaft Actuator?

The camshaft actuator is the moveable part between a cam & its sprocket. The camshaft sensor reads a location of the cam's rotation. The solenoids adjust the actuators.

You should be a able to hit 7200 rpm safely in 1st and 2nd since it only for a quick second time wise.  Third and above I would drop to 6,300 rpm since this also the peak for power in Drag racing. Problem is mainly a concern for Autocross and road racing when extended time may be spent in the top rpm range.
