2.4L Air Intake Resonator Removal (Mallet Mod)
« on: November 28, 2010, 04:42:29 PM »
I recently decided to remove my Air Intake Resonator for another modification and thought I would document this simple process:

Tools needed: Torx size 30, Phillips (cross) screwdriver, Rubber Mallet, Hacksaw (or a really sharp knife)

First of all I cut the mallet head off by splitting it across the top at the handle to make two "hockey pucks".  I then rinsed the mallet with water to remove any debris. This makes two pieces about three incles in diameter and four inches in length.

I then removed the two Torx bolts on the frame and loosen the hose clamp with the Phillips screwdriver. Removal is easy, just lift up and out towards the driver side.

Now insert the Mallet head into the hole left by the missing resonator and remove, and cut to fit. My final dimensions were one and a half inches in thickness and two and a half inches in diameter at the clamp. That means I trimmed about an inch off both sides of the mallet head to make it fit perfectly and tight in the hole and not restrict airflow.

Rinsing the mallet with water again to remove any debris. I then tighten the hose clamp is as tight as it would turn.  This mallet plug all that is keeping out the unfiltered air out of your engine.

This removal frees up a lot of engine compartment space, does not make any more noise than stock, and has not negatively impacted my fuel economy.

I just did this myself last weekend.

I used a plastic black cap from a spray paint can, cut down to about half height instead of a mallet.

Did this about a week and half ago. Used a hockey puck and cut it to size with my dremel. Looks alot better than the giant resonator sitting there. Though there isnt a big sound difference normally, but some rare occurances of some slow speed crawling (less than 10mph) it drones like a mofo. Im guessing that is what the resonator was for. lol

I mainly notice it when I visit my mother and have to turn around in her driveway to get back out because Id scrape if I back out. Doesnt make sense because I dont scrape when going into the driveway.  :idk:
