Another blown out intercooler
« on: December 07, 2010, 04:13:10 PM »
Reading 29-30 psi a month ago, the car was boosting a little less everyday, I removed the bumper and saw this:

Shit stock intercooler! It's not small, but is not good.
Solo + Magnaflow 3" exhaust
OZ Ultraleggera 19"
Rotora 4p front
Brembo 4p rear
LV Brace
Custom Backbone (1/2")

Damn,  That is a bad break

You call it a shit stock IC but it was designed for a system running a max of 20 PSI.    I know they test them to more than that but 29 to 30 PSI is pretty high and I suspect all of the stock IC will eventually fail at those pressures.

Sorry to see the IC failure!!! I guess this is a fore-shadowing of what is to come as people continue to push the LNF to it's limits.  Thanks be to DDM and Werks and the other aftermarket kings for quality replacement parts.

I think it would be nice to know what the stock IC and vendors IC are tested to.  I checked DDM and their only list it's capable of supporting 750HP

I think it's really interesting that it failed at the welds. One mine the airways all ballooned up, DBG can back me up. Looks like this is NOT related to the supposed bad batch of intercoolers.

Sucks dude, but I guess we know kinda were the failure point is now.

Ours are tested to 65psi.

Hope that helps. Also there is a sale we are putting together on our intercoolers, should be up tomorrow :)

half of the IC i've seen failing are exactly at the point where Kuprito's failed.
and this makes sense, coz it's where the air from the trubo gathers.
No worries Kuprito, it's a good chance to go for an aftermarket one!!

Dave, i hope your offer will NOT be good! for God's shake i just rejected yours to get one custom made locally, and that was because of pricing (actually the shipping cost is what would make it NOT affordable fro me)... you are killing me...an offer the next day i had one installed...  :banghead: :banghead:

I got one from Dejon 1.5 years ago, payed 120$ for shipping keeping the total price under 700E, no problems since than
I have outrun my friends on the intake temp with comparable engines (2.0 T, DI, VVT, k04) Audi S3 or VW Golf 5 GTI with their upgraded Forge intercoolers  :barf2: We have compared under normal driving, racing day/night/hot days

So Carlos go aftermarket or custom and everything will be better, with lower intake temps you gonna protect your engine  ;)

You can add me to the club of failed intercoolers.  If you read my post, about two weeks ago, same thing and in about the same area.   I now have a DEJON intercooler, but I am sure any performance intercooler would be an improvement.  I only run Westers tune that maxes at 23lbs I thought.

What year is your car?
If you are relying on the DIC boost guage and running Westers Race Tune, your pressures may be 26psi or higher, the DIC in an '07 tops out @ 23psi.

Well I know tomorrow never comes......but it is the day after yesterday!

Sorry for the delay, was hoping to announce a new product at the same time, but have to do some more testing before release.

We did get the coupon codes made for the intercoolers, and the sale is on!

The holiday sales keep rolling over here

This time it is on our DDMworks intercoolers.

Normal price is $895 for these, and we are selling these for $150 off with coupon code - ICDEAL. This is only for the limited intercoolers we have in stock, once those are gone, deal is over.

Want to add charge tubes with the intercooler? Use coupon code - ICDEALBUNDLE and you get $175 off of the entire package, its like buying and intercooler and getting the charge tubes for free! (actually it is even better than that  )

Link to order intercooler: http://www.ddmworks.com/solstice/engine/lnf_intercooler.html

Link to order charge tubes: http://www.ddmworks.com/solstice/engine/lnf_charge_tubes.htm

As usual, let me know if you have any questions!
Dave

This is going to be a really good upgrade for a new item we are getting ready to release....

when i p/up the car i asked the salesman about the i/c and he said the service dept mentioned that it looked different than the older (failing) ones hopefully the 2009 oe are stronger than the 2007 oe.the ones on the big trucks are cast in aluminum, not rolled and crimped like in the pictures
D.D.1980 Spider 2000(you guessed it,my name is tony)-144,xxx miles,no 2nd gear 3rd gear gone too and the fuel pump.currently running 93 mx5 cause i`m too lazy to fix the fiat(have hardtops on both)
