Latest update:

The car has been at the dealer for 4 days now. The turbo is shot - they are going to replace it under the drivetrain warranty.

As far as the compression issue, my "non-technical" understanding is that they are thinking that the turbo was blowing oil into the cylinder and that is causing the piston to not operate at 100% due to carbon buildup within the cylinder. The dealer did another dry compression test and they feel this is whats happening, but they are going to do a wet compression test next. Apparently that will definitively tell them if there is any internal damage, or if it is just carbon buildup.

The good news is that whatever they find, they are going to cover under warranty. Apparently the turbo is on nationwide backorder through GM so they don't know when they will be able to put it all back together, but they are paying for a rental car until they get done with my car.

For the record, i took the car in with the aftermarket pipes, CAI, and intercooler. The dealer said that was not a problem at all.

jws0318, glad that you will be good to go and that the dealer will honor the warranty work. Thanks for keeping members of the forum updated. Look forward to when you get your pride and joy back home and you will be able to take her out in Arizona weather. How sweet does it get. I would love to be able to import some of that Arizona weather back to KC. You are so lucky to live in a state with top down weather all year. Carol and I raised our boy's in Arizona. To bad we didn't own a Roadster then. Happy trails...

I agree that the weather out here, especially now, is ideal. Yesterday was mid 70's, light breeze...

This would have been more convienient for the Sky to have issues in August when it's 110+ degrees, but even in the heat of the summer, i still don't have to shovel snow, so it's a win in my book!

The dealer called late Friday. They are also ordering a new cylinder head. Does this sound right?

Thats their method of cleaning the combustion chamber & valves & mostly covering their ass if it was valve-train related & the turbo incident was their misdiagnosis & subsequent failed repair. After its all supposedly over & done you/they may still find its a piston ring failure. Have fun & enjoy the ride! I'd start thinking about personalizing the rental car!! What did yo get a G6 ? Id say I want a $30K loaner, maybe a GXP Solstice. That would bee fair!

When i pulled the charge pipe on the turbo side prior to taking the car in, there was no sign of any oil in it. does this mean the oil likely never made it to the intercooler?

Thanks Spider and everyone. I am learning a lot about the LNF as this progresses, and I thank you all for your time and input. Mechanically speaking, I'm an idiot - I know that - I just want to make sure I know enough to keep the dealer honest and on track with the repairs. I honestly don't care if it takes them a month to get it fixed, as long as its done right the first time and i don't have to go back for additional troubleshooting/work on their part.

Oh, for the record, I'm rolling in an Impala rental. Nice enough car, but compared to the Sky, it feels like I'm the skipper of the Titanic.

I was out there Jan.20-25th for the B/J and R/S Auctions It was 70+ all5 days .On Sunday the 24th There was a Silver Sky for sale on the road going to Russo/Steels Auction Parked. Saturday there was 1 on Ramp to 101 when I was headed back to Hotel tried to get their attention but failed. My car is waiting a Motor they have had it going on 2 weeks and I have a rental HHR under warrenty till fixed . Good Luck

Took tje dealer 9 weeks to install engine and I got no rental no matter how much I talked to them. Reasons for taking 9 weeks
1 miss diagnosis
2 took 4 weeks to figure out the engine was blown ordered new parts , put parts in old engine
Car ran like crap.
3 new engine took 2 weeks to get to dealer took another 2 weeks to install. Problem they had was bolts and hOses kept braking. Everything for our cars I's unavailable and they have to special order everything. I know that's not there fault it just sucks.

correct, but in any case i would prefer to have warranty work and no rental than to have no warranty work at all.

So the saga continues...

I've picked the car up twice and had it back to the dealer within 48 hours as the same symptoms (white smoke from the tailpipe) were still present. They now have completely removed the engine from the car and taken it apart to find 2 piston rings are cracked. They are ordering parts again and hopefully they have it figured out this time.

Apparently they need to pull the tranny to get the engine out - I'm thinking that this may be an opportune time to replace the clutch (09 5-speed with 60k miles) since it's already disassembled and I would not have to pay most of the labor to have it done later - thoughts?

On the bright side, i now know i don't want to ever own a Malibu, Ford Focus, Impala, F250 Crew cab 4x4, Jeep Grand Cherokee or a HHR. That's my list of rental cars over the last 6 weeks.

Definitely replace the clutch while you have it apart! Normally the labor costs about $1,000 for a clutch job! If they say that the parts are not in stock, order from ICS and save even more!
