I wasn't there when they opened it up and didn't see it in person but judging by the pic I'd say maybe a foot and a half to two feet more room maybe.  As you can see though it does open up and you can see pavement.

The sound is more than enough for me as far as base goes.

Sealed and shallow mount as well.  To clarify the depth also, it may be a foot and a half or so at the deepest point but the area is not square deep, it funnels down sort of like a cone.  If you look at the box made you will see more less how the area funnels down in the back.

Wow, you still had to use a shallow mount woofer even after extending the boxes.  The shape is definitely odd (funnel, like you said).  You wouldn't be able to get something in there with a wide magnet.  I am starting to think that spending the extra money on that is not worth it.  My single shallow ten sounds really good that I have in there now...really tight and impacting on kick drum hits.  It just lacks a little low end in hip hop songs...which I don't listen to very often.

Send them to me.  They will bolt right up on my car, no wide ass needed.

I didn't cut my back panel out...but i managed to fit a single 12 in mine....hits low enough for any songs I play....but down the road when I upgrade my alternator and add a 2nd battery, i plan on cutting both sides and putting in a more serious sub system....but you could easily add another .5 cu.ft. if you cut out the space...possibly .75

Currently I have an Infinity Kappa 12....I think it was around 6" deep.
I didn't use the stock box...too thin....flex's too much.
Fabricated my own box and popped it out a few inches from the back cover.

Ah that makes sense...I was gonna say that the OEM box could not fit a sub 6" deep without bringing it out.  Good call!

HA I might have my installer glass it and put in a Hertz 10".  We worked something out so it won't be expensive.

I'm going with a Volchez 10" with a little glass work and some serious tweetering and midrange soloplexus, with both high and low pass cross filters and sub powered amplifications tied in series with the small mids and a large tweets pair, complete with crossovers and directional annalysis.  It should be epic.

HA well that sounds epic to me!!  Don't forget the flux midranges with electron crossover networks, using only the finest in titanium alloy.  If you're going to add a sub, stay away from the Volchez 10"...I heard bad things...I would go with the Black Hole 10" quadruple voicecoil model.  You won't be disappointed.  One word of caution...the Black Hole sub can sometimes overheat causing internal meltdown and sucking the car inside out.  Quite a fun ride if you ask me.

HA HA So after talking with my audio guy yesterday, we decided to go ahead and glass out a bigger enclosure for the sub.  If you knew what I was paying, you would think I'm very lucky.  We are going to try a Hertz HX250D Subwoofer: http://www.hertzaudiovideo.com/default_en.htm

It is one of the best 10" woofers that you can get for SQ applications.

The box is finally done.  The back wall of the stock sub compartment was cut out and we fiberglassed a larger box right onto the stock box so we could still use the mounts in the front of the box to screw it onto the back wall.  We were able to increase the box to .8 cubic feet.  The stock box is about .3 cubic feet.  We used the same Helix flat 10" woofer, which used about 1.5-2 cubic feet.  The sub has COME ALIVE.  It is night and day completely...the response is so much better, output is totally night and day better, and music is now much fuller.  If you are going to add an aftermarket subwoofer to this car, you would not be doing it justice without expanding the air space for it to operate.  The sub you choose is only half the battle.  It doesn't matter what sub you have in there...you need air behind it...end of story.  My flat ten sounds unreal now and is perfect...not too much and not too little.  I have the gain turned down now...that's how much of a difference it makes.  If you have the money and the means, fiberglass in a larger box or you will never get the full potential of any sub you put in there.  Half a cubic foot more air space makes all the world difference in this car!
