Have ya' painted or powdercoated the turbo heat shield?
« on: February 01, 2011, 12:27:50 AM »
Has anyone painted or powdercoated the turbo heat shield? How's it holding up?

My powdercoater has said that he can powdercoat it but we aren't sure how hot it gets. I know we don't need a ceramic coating but we might need a hi temperature powder coat if it gets above about 400 degrees F.

What did you use?

Bob, try 1800 degrees...  I now have a polishing setup on the drill press.  you can use it at the meet to make your stock turbo cover look like a mirror.

Black header paint will work.  Or any color header paint from an auto parts store.  I think I might throw some black on mine today.

Bob, try 1800 degrees...
Joe, I know it gets hot at the turbo but there's an air space between the turbo and the shield and if the shield was 1800 degrees it wouldn't stay shiny but would turn blue.

Heck, maybe I'll try the hi temp powder. If it doesn't work, the most it cost me is $10 to try it.

I did mine, Deedle, Go-n Def and Darkteck and it's still looks great.  Not exaclty a mirror finish but the shield is double walled and it doesn't tarnish.  I'm not sure what the material of it is.

$10 isn't bad until it doesn't hold up in the heat and you have to remove it.  Hope it works out.

Most of the google searches show that the temps of the turbo itself get to about 1500 degrees and EGT after the turbo get to about 1350 degrees.  Make sure the high temp powdercoating is rated high enough or you'll be removing burnt paint.

Removing the powder coating isn't an issue as he has a dip tank that takes it right off. That's got to be wonderful stuff...

I'm an adventurous sort o' guy. Someone has to be first to try it.   :D

I certainly won't be using regular powdercoating. Mine will last until the spring at least.

I guess I would be more concerned with the potential to start a fire in the engine compartment and the collateral damage it may cause.  Could end up costing much more then $10.

I used high temp paint from Auto Zone. Although it has darkened a bit with time it shows no signs of peeling, cracking, or burning. It's been on there for about 2 years now.

Took the cover off today and went with the high heat powder. I'll find out in the spring how it holds up. Lots of colours available. Could have done it in black or in silver.   :D

I picked silver...

He has my rocker cover, my coil cover, the DDM charge tubes, GMPP CAI and the turbo shield. It'll be nice and shiny under there!   :D

2500 degree ceramic coating, same as exhaust manifold.

Not half as much as me.  :D

If the high heat powder doesn't do it, that's next. I'll do satin black then.

The one I have was spray painted by it's previous owner and the heat ruined it. No idea what type of paint was used.

Polished mine, then applied a Pontiac Die Cut Decal (~2.5" tall), then a quick trip to the bead blaster.

Looks great after I removed the decal.

I know,,,, I need a photo.  Right now only have my Netbook and the photos are unavailable.  :banghead:
