Asheville 2012 Event Ideas
« on: May 13, 2011, 06:59:09 PM »
Ok folks. As many of you know duckSol and myself are in the process of setting up the Nationals for 2012 in Asheville North Carolina. Things are starting to move along quickly and an announcement could be made within the next week or two.

For those of you who may consider attending, this post is to try to get some ideas on what types of activities, other than the cruises, that folks may be interested in so we can put some of our volunteers in charge of these activities and get started on getting them set up.

These are some of the ideas we have come up with so far are (Web site links are in blue):

A trip on the Great Smokey Mountain Rail Road.  Great Smokey Mountain Rail Road

A Zip Line Canopy Tour.  Navitat Canopy Adventures

A Tubing trip on one of the area rivers: Green River Cove Tubing Home Page

Tubing with Huck Finn Rafting | Rafting in Hot Springs NC near Asheville NC

A trip to Sliding Rock (which is on one of our run routes): Sliding Rock - Brevard, North Carolina

A possible trip to Cherokee to Harrah's Casino: Harrah's Casino Cherokee

And of course no trip to Asheville would be complete without a trip to Biltmore Estates: BILTMORE in Asheville, North Carolina, Americas Largest Home and More!

So the discussion is now open. Please give us some feed back on which ones interest you the most.

Biltmore is great. There are so many little things to see like Napoleon's chess set from St. Helena.
There is so much more to see than when I was kid being drug through the place by Asheville Camera Club parents.
It is more than America's castle.

Hilt ore can be contacted for special photo session with cars. Hearst castle does similar out here.  Could be done with a pro photographer, perhaps a member that would donate time.  Potential for beautiful shots.

Just a thought

Working on this for the group photo.

The best 'light' is in the morning between 9 & 10 AM so we will need a morning shoot.

Just a little side note. Close to the entrance to Biltmore Estate is a Mc Donalds that is rated as one of their ten most unusual in the world.

VaSky and the Quacker,

Sorry for the diversion.  The photo op with the Biltmore is a great idea.

As for other ideas, the days are long, what about some non car related games, simple stuff, like bean bag football tournament, limbo contest or other simple games?  Collect entry fee, award prizes, allow teams to be made... Just fun stuff.

On second thought putting GJ in charge of games and contests might not turn out to well... LOL.

While I was down in North Carolina for Mini's on the Dragon, we did the Great Smokey Mountain Rail Road.
It was really cool.  We stopped in Natahala and got to watch some kayackers practice.

I've wanted to do the zip line but missed out so far.

How far is the Dragon from Asheville.  Maybe a day trip to go there and come back?

Other neat road trip could be the road to nowhere.

The locals could explain the history behind that.

Hey elff the dragon, round trip, which would be doing 28 and the dragon then turning around and coming back the same way is about 5 hours.

The road to nowhere is a new one to me but either duck or my girl friend may know what you are talking about. I'll have to check into that one...

Gotcha, wasn't sure since alot of the other events mentioned were offered while I was at Fontana Village, I didn't realize they were that far apart.

The Road to Nowhere is fairly close to Bryson City.
When we got back from the Railroad, we were going to give it a drive, but we ran out of time and had to head back to Fontana Village

What month is 2012 planned for?

The road to nowhere is in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the NC side close to the Dragon.

Just google NC road to nowhere.

The week of Summer Solstice being held for us at the moment.
We have right of first refusal if another group asks for that week.

If you do anything in Brevard ... eats at Hawg Wild (right on 276 in Brevard) are pretty good!  And take the straight shot up 276 into Pisgah National Forest ... the roads are 'dragon' like and most excellent!  If you happen to do the Blue Ridge Parkway there is a great place to get a magnificent photo OP of the road coming toward - do this from MP 451.2 Waterrock Knob Visitor Center.

Just got home from a great trip in the area .. will post pics of this exact location later.  Time to unpack and unwind!

There is a better BBQ place in Canton, NC ... O.C.'s 6147 Pigeon Road.  The food is MUCH better than Hawg Wild and the people who work there are much more FUN!  If you go, be sure to ask the owner how he prepares his Armadillo ... (see if he remembers the two SOL drivers he tried to BS but one just added to the story!)
