scheduling an appt with one of the long time, small dealers in the area, to get the compression test done. Will see what they say, will give me something to work with anyway.

You can't use that much oil without some sort of sign.  When you cleaned the rear was it oil or soot?  You could be leaking oil down the back of the engine, which you may not be able to see, it would be slung under the car and out the back leaving a film on the rear.  Can you get under the car to see if it is wet with oil.

Did you do the rag over the exhaust yet?

rear end was both small splatters of oil, out of the tail pipe, and soot, the film on the rear is confined to the area surrounding the tail pipe. Tomorrow morning, possibly tonight, I will get it up on the ramps and visually inspect the underside. Still waiting for a call back from the dealer in Kaukauna.

 Talked to a small dealer today, my future source for all stock related repairs, and after he individually talked to every tech that works on the Ecotecs, the unanimous opinion was that B foobarred the head. So, after next weekend, Kenny will go back to them to make it right, hopefully by then I'm not half as mad as I am now!

update, sort of. Kenny is at Mound View Motors (GM shop) in Platteville, WI. Severe knocking and clatter returned yesterday, shortly before arriving here for our little meet / run this weekend. Awaiting a call on the diagnosis, notified the home shop of what was happening late yesterday, as soon as I was able to limp into town, and they told me to get it into the closest GM shop. Don't know if the repairs will be done here, or if they (home dealer) will opt to flat bed him and me, the 175 miles back home.

just found this thread...guess what boys and girls, it appears I've also been hit by the piston #1 failure, will be at the shop in a little while to talk options, and talking to Pontiac as well...ESP since when B had it apart, one plug was totally burned up, what are the odds it corresponded to piston #1....any good shop should have stopped right there and said we strongly recommend looking at internals while we are this close, w/100k+ miles, and
this one destroyed plug...

here's the issue that forced Kenny to sit in the shop all weekend, copied straight from the receipt:
#3 rocker arm on the intake vlv fell out & was laying on top of the cyl head. reinstall #3 rocker arm.
how the ?!? does that happen??
oh, and the total bill, including Mobil1 oil change, and filter....$89.66

? which one is #3, 2nd from front, or rear?  I'm going to go out, now that it's cooled down, and check the plugs, would be interesting to know if the totally burned up plug that Bfubar found during the head gasket job, correlates to this some how.

Hmm . . . there are 8 intake valves.  Count from the front, I think.  I don't honestly know for sure without digging into the service manual.  Easiest to call Mound View and ask the SM to explain which valve . . . and to thank him again for taking it easy on you.  What a gift that service was.

The number 3 probably  refers to the cylinder number.  1 is in the front and 4 is the last one.  So to answer your question(s)

Head was off and when put back together not properly put back together properly.    If they had to machine the head at all they had to take every off of it to do so.  There should be a lock nut on top of the adjustment nut.

been pouring over the service manuals all afternoon, and they go into scant little detail on engine specific bits. found more info on the GM Performance site, now have  several nice PDFs on building up the Ecotec,. no detail either on the other outstanding hub/rotor issue...

thanks, critter, now that the wind is dying down, it's almost safe to get under the hood to check the plugs.

AR, if they boned up your last repair, then they are liable.  Our engines are a zero clearance engine.  If the valve fell out or the seat did, it probably did damage to the piston and if they had the head off, they probably didn't tighten something up which caused your latest issue.

Update to the Kenny saga:
dropped him Sunday at the dealer, and finally, they admitted that they saw the sludge that's coming out the tail pipe. So they topped the oil, it was again down a quart, after about 300 miles since last changed, and told me to put another 1000 miles on him, and bring him back in.    They also noted on the receipt the aftermarket exhaust, and CAI, as if....  :idk:

Did they tell you to keep and eye on the oil and top it up as needed?  If not I would be tempted to run it out of oil and make them replace the seized engine that will result.  You have already made them aware there is an issue and their fix is to do nothing and see what happens?  It's not hard to predict what will happen.

maybe you should ask them to write down this "prescription" they gave you and sign it..

I considered that, and had a chuckle as I walked out of the service area, and two of the writers were discussing a car being towed in that was 4 quarts low on oil  :tool:
