P0101 code and limp mode
« on: August 06, 2011, 09:52:57 PM »
As some of you know, I have had a demon P0101 code for about 18 months.  I tried everything everyone suggested.  Then, dumb luck took over.  A fellow San Diego kappa owner bought a set of Werks IC pipes.  He began installation and decided he did not like them.  He decided on a set from DDM instead.  He is not very active on the forum and I offered to help him sell the pipes.  They were chrome, which I didn't want for my car.  After meeting up with him and getting the pipes, decided I'd buy them from him ( thanks for a great deal Jon!) and paint them.  So began the under hood painting process.  I pulled my DDM cross bay brace, DDM Coil cover, stock turbo outlet elbow, turbo heat shield and the new Werks pipes and sanded them all down.  The heat shield and the elbow I painted with some 2000* paint in flat black.  The rest of the stuff I painted with 500* semi gloss black.  As I began reassembly I realized the IC pipes were not fitting very well for me. (Werks website clearly states these pipes do not work with the stock air box, so I knew I was in for some custom fab work.) I purchased a Dejon intake pipe for the stock air box to the turbo, modified the stock air box bracket and was able to reassemble.  After many trials and errors, cutting an angle on the down side of the passenger side pipe and some longer rubber connector tubes, I got the system to hold together under boost.  Not only have I not seen my demon code, I am now hitting boost numbers previously unattainable.  I know some of you are not going to believe this, but I saw 24 psi on my DIC.  I have always heard that the 07s only went up to 23, but I distinctly saw 24 flash across the screen.  I will attempt to video this miracle, but that is difficult to do safely.  Prior to the work, I would hit 21 or 22 but it wouldn't hold.  I searched and searched for a leak.  I changed clamps several times, installed, removed, reinstalled everything trying to chase down my demon, with no luck.  I am now wondering if one of my stock pipes may actually have a hole in it, or perhaps one of my stock rubber connectors.  I can now hold 23 sustained during acceleration.  ( for those of you that say boost numbers are irrelevant, I live in San Diego.  The weather is as consistent as it gets.  These numbers are not weather relative.  The results encompass enough time to be real changes, not changes due to weather and or humidity etc)
The car is an animal now.  I walked step for step down the freeway with a early 2000's Carrera today (from 50 to about 100) until he decided it was fun to start weaving.  I let him go.  Jon was behind me.  We hit some twisties and the car was great.   Not hitting limp mode after a long acceleration is so nice!  I'm not going to be so brave as to say it's gone for good, but it's gone for now.  I have some pics of the new engine bay that I will post later tonight.  The last thing I have to figure out is how to get my cross bay brace and the passenger IC pipe to stop rubbing against the hood liner.  I have fiddled with both, but not found the right solution yet.  It has been a long road to get to here.  I hope that I can help someone else solve their problem quicker.  I'm not saying that the new pipes solved the problem or that they helped increase boost, but I did solve the problem and I do see increased boost.  I assume I finally fixed the leak, where ever it was.  I have ordered a few extra clamps from DDM as well as a few extras from GM ( the two really good ones) to replace some of the clamps I have put on and removed so many times.  The T-bolt clamps do wear out after a few install / removal cycles.  I recommend having a few extra around if you are a tinkerer.

Now I need to find a race track..... I'm predicting 12.8 at 104 MPH....

( I believe I finally actually earned my gear head status....)

OK, here are the underhood pics:

Kelu,
Yes, I think the 24 PSI is too high for the 07 DIC to read, but like I said, I saw it.  As for help finding the track, yes.  Come over here and help me find it.  I'll promise you a new personal best.  You will easily beat your time in your car (because the tracks are better) and you'll easily beat the time you set in Kenny's car because my clutch is better.... or non-existent.

DickW,
I agree

Thanks to Kelu, Kenny's clutch is now nonexistent too.

Jack Daniels is sponsoring my car at SEMA.  They were so impressed with what they say, they offered $5K in sponsorship, plus the costs of the show.  More to follow.

And, not to derail the thread, but I have a bridge for sale.  PM for pics.

The troll is extra.  It's a TT troll.  It's overweight and it talks too much.  If you take the troll, I'll reduce the cost of the bridge.  And there will be no returns.

Please do not derail this thread with your nonsense.  This thread is about a bridge for sale... no wait, it's about a troll... no wait it is supposed to be about something serious... What the hell was this thread about anyway?  Who started this thread?

To whomever started this thread, I apologize for derailing it.  Derailing is not something I normally do.  It was an accident.  Please continue with the factual thread for the betterment of the entire group.

Thanks Scanner.
It has been a long long road.  The car was always drive-able, and the problem was intermittent, which makes diagnosis more difficult.  Ultimately, dumb luck prevailed...

For those of you that have a P0101 code:  You have an air leak.  Find it.  Kenny created a method to test your system.  Try that.  If it doesn't leak during the test, but you still have the P0101 code, you have an air leak....  :)
