UPDATE ON GARMIN PHASING OUT MAPSOURCE
« on: September 15, 2011, 05:18:22 PM »
GARMIN

It has finally happened; Garmin is phasing OUT MapSource and will be only using BASE CAMP

They do not state on the descriptions that a series does or does not use MapSource so before you waste your money here is what they recommend

Go to Garmin-Products-On The Road-Automotive- drop down boxes on the left- click ACTIVITY- click Realtor/Service calls----all the products that come up will take MapSource EXCEPT 2300 series, 2400 series and 3700 series.

Second to download the programs that they are moving forward with its BASE CAMP

Back to main page- SUPPORT-SOFTWARE-MAPPING PROGRAMS- download BASE CAMP

We are converting all our Maps to Base Camp as well as MapSource for any drivers that want our event road Maps.

Side note: I just spent 1 ½ on the phone with tech support to go through all the automotive products.

Hope this helps and if anyone has questions just ask and I will try and help

What does this mean for the average user?

Doesnt mean anything unless you have purchased Mapsource and use it to map out runs.  The user than merely uses their Garmin for getting from point A to point B will not be effected.

Only those of us who map out our own run routes and upload them to our Garmin will be effected.
Just here to help a friend!

I don't believe any of my Garmins support that anyway.

I don't believe any of my Garmins support that anyway.

It would depend on which Garmin you have.

I have a nuvi 7xx series, I think, and use Mapsource to make custom route directions for all the runs I do.

I know lower level nuvis don't necessarily have this feature, and even some of the newer (four digit #) models where they dropped this feature, so it definitely depends on which model Garmin device you have.

I took my garmin back when my droid did a better job of navigating me from A to B than a garmin did.

I realized its a decent excuse not to have to lead a group if i dont have a garmin ;)

Garmins work in Canada.  They take you on one lane unpaved roads.

I actually have both.  I do end up using the droid most of the time when I just need directions to "get somewhere."  But the mapsource software and the ability to design and load custom routes onto my garmin for runs is absolutely necessary, since I am often the one designing and mapping our local runs.  In fact that is the reason I won't upgrade my garmin any time soon, since it seems like a lot of the newer devices have dropped this capability.

Isn't nuLink ONLY supported on the nüvi® 1690? Frankly, until I did a Google search I didn't even know what nuLink was.

The 1690 and the 1695 were the test versions for NuLink, however they have decided not to continue because they feel that cell phones will do all the same stuff. The 1690's are great for MaPPing though....
