Possible Cause and Solution Over Heating Issue
« on: October 15, 2011, 07:25:38 AM »

Like many of you I have been doing some fall driving on leaf covered roads. I discovered while doing a repair job that those leaves can become trapped between the radiator core and power steering cooler and could cause a heating issue. When cleaning the leaves and debris be careful not to bend the prongs on the power steering cooler if possible. You can access them by raising the car on jack stands or ramps. You will have a clear view of the problem by looking up just behind the front bumper cover. It may require you to pull out on the power steering cooler( the round "brush" looking part ) a little to dislodge all the debris just be careful not to be to aggressive. I included a couple of images to show the area in question.

Image 1 is what the cooler and radiator look like. Image 2 is just some of the debris I removed from mine and Image 3 is an actual picture of what you will see by looking up into the area in question. Again be careful when clearing this area and avoid sharp or pointed objects. You should be able to pull most of this out by hand it may require a little lifting of the power steering cooler.

This is a common problem since the Kappa platform is a bottom feeder and gets a lot of air from cooling from the air dam underneath the car. The worst one we ever saw was on Ihawk's car at the southeastern regionals. She was running hot and we must of pulled a bale of hay from the front of the radiator.

Somehow it's not shocking that iHawks front end is fully covered.  She seems like a back to nature type that would allow the hay to collect around her ICs.  Good thing Dr. Dave was there to trim it all back and get things operating properly again.

I will now go check my area and make sure there is no extra debris down there...

(oh, and DDM Dave, I will be logging today too!  I'll send you something soon)

I checked my area really closely today.  Everything is within acceptable tolerances.  I will have an independent adjudicator evaluate and report back sometime in the next few days.
