Another audio install thread - Pioneer FH-P8000BT
« on: November 23, 2011, 01:33:23 PM »
The non-Monsoon system in Gwyneth sux. I've been doing some reading, homework, and ground work selecting what I think I'm going to use.

- Pioneer FH-P8000BT - HU (simple w/ extra functionality, can pass as an OEM unit)
- Metra - 95-3302 (double DIN adapter)
- Metra - 40-cr10 (antenna adapter)
- Metra - GMOS-LAN-03
- PAC SWI-PS
- Napa - AR201 relay

One thing I do not understand is where/ how to wire in the AR201 relay to the GMOS adapter for the turn signals "click." Can someone explain this to me? Is there anything else I need or that I missed to upgrade the headunit?
I will probably wait to upgrade the speakers later and am unsure of whether or not to install a subwoofer.

Finally got the HU. Went with Polk 6.5 components (DB6501) for the front and 3.5 coaxials (DB351) for the rear. Wired up the HU harness to the GMOS-LAN-03 today. Im hoping the ILLUM wire is correct (ORG/WHT) because another install (different HU) said it was supposed to go to the solid orange wire. I will also be lining the back wall and doors with Rubatex:

http://www.rubberplastics.com/products.htm

for sound and vibration absorption and adhering it with super 77 spray adhesive. I will try and do the install Thursday and Friday this week. I'm not sure if I'll finish considering I have a lot of other things to do before I travel for work again on Monday, but at least I'll get started. I will have to add a sub and amp later. I'm considering doing a custom center waterfall box for a 10" sub such as the one depicted here:

http://www.viperalley.com/forum/viper-discussions-srt/80816-new-flashy-twist-subwoofer.html

I've read that this location doesn't provide the best sound from the sub, but as long as it sounds decent I prefer the way that it looks as compared to being hidden behind the passenger seat. We'll see how it goes. Still trying to work out in my head how to fabricate the subwoofer box integrated into the waterfall. As I said that project is a bit further down the road.

You have seen the SoundDeadenerShowdown setup, right?  Many of us have done this and swear by it (plus he's a supporting vendor): http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi

With my stereo, I lost the click sound of the turn signal because i never installed the additional part
But
If they don't turn off, I eventually [About 30 seconds] get a chime telling me it's still on.

I have found I like this better as it is a rare occasion when the turn signal does not cancel on it's own.

Does this mean the Sky is running again?
What ended up being the issue?  I must have missed the follow up posts on that.

Yes. I've read about the sound deadener showdown stuff. I'm using rubatex because I have a lot of it on hand and the material cost me nothing. I only have to buy the adhesive and invest the time to cut the rubatex into appropriately sized shapes and apply it. It is really good and expensive material. I don't think I'll be disappointed with the results. It is like if not better than the vinyl/ nitrile closed cell foam that the sound deadener showdown uses.

I'm opting to not install the steering wheel control adapter as I was never fond of the steering wheel controls. I would inadvertently hit the mute button sometimes as I was driving plus the radio is like right there. I think the steering wheel controls are a bit over-the-top. The 8000BT has a remote anyway (not that I'll be using it). I will see how I like the lack of the turn signal clicker.
Dave said changing the oil got rid of most of the clicking sound, but he also changed the input and output valves (I did find one of them to be broken during the Open House) and he fixed a leak in the AC compressor while he was at it. The supercharger bypass solenoid still needs to be changed IMO, but seems to be opening far enough to not allow Gwyn from going into boost. Dave also tweeked the tune and she seems to be running smoother. A couple days ago I changed the oil again (switched to synthetic because Dave only used dino oil to troubleshoot) and broke down the driver's side intercooler tubing and intercooler to clean out the oil I knew was in there and cleaned the MAF sensor. There wasn't as much as I expected there to be which is a good sign. Hopefully, any troubles from here will be small ones.

Got the HU and the 6.5 components in during my visit home. What a difference a good HU and speakers make. Very happy with the new sound. I didn't have time to install the rubatex in the doors. I'll have to do that later maybe when I install the rear speakers. I'm definitely going to need a sub and amp as the 6.5 woofers are lacking. So, how many channels on an amp will I need to drive the front components, the rear speakers, and the subwoofer? Or what other configurations are there to wire these up? I'm thinking of staying with Polk for the sub with their 10" MM1040 DVC. It looks shallow enough to mount in a custom center waterfall enclosure. Not sure what amp I'm going to use. I don't want to break the bank doing this. The sub is another $200 or so and I'd like to the amp to be equal or less than that. Also, I'm opting to not use a capacitor as I think it's unnecessary. Thoughts?

I bought the Polk Audio AA3085-A MM840 DVC 8-Inch subwoofer and the MB Quart OA1100.5 5-channel amplifier. Everything is installed except the sound deadener and the subwoofer. I'm having a custom fiberglass center enclosure made for the subwoofer so it may be a while before I get it installed. I want it to look something like what this Viper owner did.

I dont get the reasoning of putting the sub there?  What's the thought process?

Acoustically, it isn't the greatest place, but IMO it does add some cool factor for car shows. Plus, I've never been fond of the waterfall cubbyhole nor have I ever stored anything in it and the cupholder always gets bumped open. So, I just want it gone.

Why not think about in the rear of the seat frame . Then put the amp in the waterfalls .I think it will look better then a Black Eye + thats not far from your ears.                Just thinking out loud

My amp is huge. It won't fit in that location. The subwoofer won't make you deaf by being that close. There have been a few 2 seat roadsters that I've seen with the sub in the OEM waterfall location. It's not like I'm reinventing the wheel.

Just following bad design.

That's all show and no go. It's a terrible location and you will feel the sub on your ear drums at that range.
