I think recessed grills look perfect.  Flush looks out out of place, in fact.  I'm just saying that all of the grills should be recessed...  If you look, the lower stock "chin spoiler" grill is recessed in appearance.

Let's not get too ahead of ourselves.

Ahead of ourselves?  I'm holding back!  I actually want the HOOD from the weekend club racer concept  ... but with the 68/69 GTO style scoops from the SSBC/Mallet car incorporated as well.  Can we print and prototype THAT next?  :D

Here's a pic to get us started.  Second thought, maybe push the scoops a little farther forward so I can use them to make room for my supercharged LS3 ala sbindley...  Should I start a new thread?

Thanks for all the effort thus far guys!  :urock:

The 3D printing technology has come SO far in the last few years. There are so many more materials available now and the machines are so much better than they were. I spoke to the gentleman locally that used to do it. He sold his machine because things had changed so much in the 3 years that he had it. That 3 year old machine was dinosaur (his words, not mine) compared to what they can do now. It way better and cheaper than it was when he bought his machine. Cost him $30,000 at the time.

You can buy consumer machines now for less than $1000

I have to apologize to everyone here. I've been pumped about this from the time that Sol Asylum first said that he was going to do this. I also have jumped to conclusions that I shouldn't have before I had more information. When you're doing research, talking to the people that are in the business of doing that type of thing is the best way to get information.

I went to the 3D printing place I mentioned earlier in Toronto today. After I spoke to the gentleman there I now know that  the 3D printing isn't the most cost effective way to do this. I mean, for a one off, there is no better way but for 10 sets or maybe 20 sets, it's gonna cost way more than it would if the parts were made using a system similar to what Rudy was using. The guys in Toronto said that the material choice that he made and used to manufacture wasn't the best he could have chosen and that there are a pile of materials available including ABS in a manual injection system. They use rubber molds and I assume there are probably other options out there that he didn't mention as well.

I am eating my slice of humble pie and am stepping back from this. I would still like to talk to the guys in Toronto Monday to see what else they can suggest to make this happen but I will only tell you what they said. I'll try to take a step back and not let my excitement for the project get the best of me. I also look forward to seeing the next iteration of the design and if you need any more measurements SA I will do my damnedest to get them to you.

Don't feel bad Bob there are some knowledgeable folks here wanting this to happen and I am sure we will find a way to make it a reality.

I have done a fair amount of plastic casting using silicone molds I even tried to help Rudy but for whatever reason he choose to do things the way he did.  My problem with casting something like this besides the lack of time is the equipment I have isn't large enough for parts this size.

But I am confident that those working on this will find a way.

That place I went today mentioned manual urethane injection moulding but I won't venture to guess what the price would be without having a file that they could look at,

That looks fantastic! I cant wait! :yay:
Is this a straight recess or does it narrow down for draft? ...I really need to start working on my CAD skills again, I miss doing this kind of work.

Looks great SA but I have one question. In the bottom picture it looks as if there is more set back on the grills in relation to the ring as you go further out from the center of the car. Hopefully it's just an optical illusion.

There are a few degrees of draft on the tunnel part so the grill is slightly smaller than stock.

Bob, the grill is a constant set back from the bezel, I am going to call it an optional illusion and choose not to see it.

What about doing these in carbon fiber?  Maverickman is a company that does carbon fiber pieces for GTO, G8, and Trailblazer SS.  I had asked him a year ago about making these but he did not know if there would be enough interest, and he thought Aftershock was in business and there would not be enough room in the market place for to vendors.    I have seen his work when I had my TBSS, its good the guy is a perfectionist.  Let  me know what you guys think..

It's possible I guess.  However other then the tunnel section there really isn't much surface area to the part so the carbon fiber may not really show up.  Not really sure it would be worth it.

I for one am not interested in carbon fiber grills, just a recessed grill made from a durable material that I can paint to match the other grills on the car. For carbon fiber you could always do this.
