Charcoal gives a better flavor but takes longer.

(I already made copies and going out to install them today also made a copy for my Model to match . SA the holes were a real bummer to cut out though . They do look good . Gonna make 12 extra sets so when they get wet I can change them. )

Well ( SA ) I did make 12 sets all out of copy paper , isn't that what you did in your post ? I'm ready to buy the real thing when they are done . Keep up the good work .

This thread was a big part of why I joined this forum.
I really love the way those lucky few that have the aftershock ones look.
After reading all of the comments about the "extra" work that went into making them work and the many brittle comments, i am curious to know if technology has changed enough since then to make out of a more durable/flexible material?
It does seem that every day I hear about a new breakthrough in 3d printing but I never here about the quality of what these 3d printers create...
Your thoughts? How big (in inches) would these be?
I have been contemplating getting one of these things for a while but obviously it would have to be able to print out a big enough size.... And would what it printed last 5 minutes on the front of our cars?

As you might be able to tell from my lack of posts on progress I haven't even looked at this project for a while. I just don't have the free time and have a bunch of other projects ahead of this one. I thought I was done with it but some want changes which I don't have a problem with but it's going to take time I don't have right now.

I can't say what the final product will be made out of, prototyping will probably be done on a 3D printer and there is a range of materials available for that process. Production parts will probably be a cast part and there are a lot of materials to choose from there. Both of these operations will be taken care of by another party, I have only signed on to do the design part of this.

Some of the known problems with the prior recessed grill were due to the molding and material used and could have been avoided at that time. Creating molds takes a lot of forethough and experience to figure out how to avoid problems when casting the parts, extra time at the beginning can save tons of time later to finish a part. Personally no part should be shipped to a customer that requires flash to be removed that's just being either cheap or lazy. As for the fragile parts that's just choosing the wrong material to start with and continuing to make parts after knowing the issue made no sense to me.

Gadget 3D printers are like cars you get what you pay for and you can get something that uses play dough for $50 or something that produces super high quality parts out of practically any material you want just so long as you can afford it. They come in all kinds of sizes from desk top to something that can take up a whole room. Finished parts can be very durable again depending on what you are willing to pay for. For one off parts they are the way to go but for manufacturing multiples there are better ways.

Personally the lower end printers don't produce parts with the resolution that I would find acceptable, curved surfaces are very faceted and require a lot of finishing to make usable. Unless you are using the printer multiple times per day, every day, it's hard to justify the cost of buying the machine when you can just send the file to someone that will print it for you, especially when these things can become obsolete in a short period of time.

I, for one would be happy to pay a price for all of your hard work, what if we set up a prepay group buy? Would that help make it worth your time to prioritize them. I certainly do not want to speak for anyone else, but there does seen to be a good level of interest in this project, and I am a strong believer in a person getting compensated for their time and effort...

There is no ETA and I was doing this strictly as a voluntary thing. I really don't even have an interest in putting a set on my car. Basically working 12 hour days for the last 6+ months means that I don't have much desire to come home and spend time doing more of the same. Hell I don't even want to go to work and design things anymore.

SA, SB, this is not a "are we there yet" post at all.

This whole post has actually inspired me to think about getting a 3D printer myself recently, as the technology fascinates me, (and this would give me a good excuse to get one

hence the question about measurements of the pieces.

After all that is a big reason of why i joined this forum is because you all inspired me to take on projects i would otherwise have not done

I too would love to get one but the small consumer machines although available for under $1000 don't generally print items as large as the grills. Printing with ABS would make for a strong and durable product though.
