DIE Titanium Heat Shield - T3 or T4 size?
« on: February 16, 2013, 12:06:51 PM »
I'm thinking about getting a DEI turbo blanket - they call it shield for some reason.  I have looked through a lot of posts but did not see a lessons learned or which size is best.  I believe it should be the T3 size but can anybody confirm for me?  I think the T4 is a little large after measuring.

One post suggested the OEM shield has to come off and stay off.  Is that true?

First about which turbo are you talking about?

If is about stock one, even T3 might be too big, T3 are for mid size turbos like GT30.

Didn't someone have one of these burn up on them because they really aren't rated for the temperatures that it was exposed to?

I almost destroyed one of these but it was in about 6-8 months, and it was destroyed mostly inside, outside it was looking good. I had to replace the turbo and I saw the damage inside, it was still usable but ...

Why wrap the turbo in a blanket?  What is the benefit?

There are a ton of posts on the forums but I could not find/refind ones that discussed the size of the K04.  I measured the outside circumference and is appeared to be about 18 inches so the DEI website suggests the T3 size, where the T4 size is 22 inches in circumference.  Sky888 used one and was happy with it.  Dave at Werks has sold two sizes since 2008, one for smaller T3/T4 and a larger one for T6 (they are under the turbo components section.  I tried to call today to ask him about them but he was out.  I will call him and see what the specs are for the one he is selling for $150.  The DEI ones are just a little higher in price but claim they can withstand 1800 degrees direct contact and 2500 indirect contact.  Hopefully Dave's are just as good.

DEI calls it a "turbo shield" but elsewhere it is called a turbo blanket.  It is sort of confusing since our stock heat sheild is a piece of metal.

Faster spool times (up to a couple hundred RPMs) and lower underhood temps

Design Engineering Inc ( DEI ) Makes a wrap for Headers from 1,500 to 2,500 degrees F . They are located in Avon,OH 44011    1-(216) 934-0800 .  I'm going to wrap mine to keep heat down on my Powdercoated Heat Sheild . It comes with Stainless Bands

The wrap is only about 60.00 now compared to 237.00  and it does the same thing Except the Blanket looks like an overcoat . I'm using it t keep the temp off my powdercoated Heat Shield

Theoretically, practically in my case, same setup, same turbo (big one), no difference in spool with or without blanket

I saw a post where someone appeared to have used something intended by DEI to simply protect the starter as a blanket for the header and it smoked it in a day or two.  Speaking of header blankets, the 2.4L comes with one, and Dave at DDM sells an upgraded one.  Not sure why the 2.0L didn't get even a cheap one from the factory.

Most of the people who used one were happy with a turbo blanket though I get the impression it lasts up to two years before falling away.  Sounded interesting so I thought I might try it.  I think what hooked me was the idea that it seemed to push the torque curve a little lower as well.  One of the small pet peeves I have with my manual is how carefully one has to feather the car from a stop - it needs all the torque help it can get.

I remember that post!  Yeah, definitely not rated for turbo temps.

They are fantastic at keeping temps down. My cheapo, ebay XPW turbo beanie is still running strong after two years.
