GXP cluster in a base Solstice?
« on: July 12, 2013, 04:15:20 PM »
I've got a lower-redline engine in my Solstice, so having a GXP cluster will work a bit better (on top of not having the ugly white on red numerals/markings.)
Some questions -
Will a GXP cluster work in a base model? Obviously it will bolt in, but is the wiring harness the same in this respect? Will the base's BCM drive it properly?
Odometer- I've been lead to believe that the odometer is set via the BCM, so swapping clusters won't change the mileage readout; will the new cluster pick up the old mileage?
Chrome GXP lettering - anybody ever scraped it off? Does it come off easily?

A lower redline engine?

Redline like engine revs or redline like the turbo sky?

Lower redline as in reduced RPMs. My fuel cutoff is at 6500 instead of 7k, would rather have a tach that shows the redline a bit before then like the GXP's so I don't forget that I'm out of revs. It's not like I'm making power over 6300 RPM, anyhow.
The extra 20mph of headroom on the speedo is just a bonus.

The clusters are ALL the same... Sky/Sol/OpelGT/Redline/GXP.  Only the faceplate and needles are different. All interchangeable.  Easiest thing to do is to get a new custo faceplate from BlackCatCustom.com

The gauge will not read correctly if you put a GXP on in there because the graduations are different that allow for the additional 20 mph.  This is controlled from the BCM.  TS is correct, the cluster itself is the same, just the faceplate is different.   BTW, all models of the Kappa redline at 6300 unless you take advantage of a tune.

Already bought a GXP cluster on eBay- it was cheap.
Installing new facings is more of a pain than just doing a whole cluster swap.

Cobalt owners report that swapping clusters with different max speeds keep the correct readout, and the Kappa's cluster is basically the same in layout. With the GMLAN data bus, it doesn't make sense that the BCM would send the needle angle to the cluster when it could just send the current speed, and have the cluster figure out how much to turn the needle.
As far as redline, my 2.4L cluster is marked at 6900, and I don't remember ever hitting fuel cut while that engine was still in the car, there's no way GM shipped a car with an indicated redline higher than fuel cut. LNF cars all have the lower redline.

I was hoping someone would have tried this before to tell me if it works before I tear up my dashboard. I'll report back once I've tried it out.

Speedo, tach, idiot and all indicator lights worked. However, the only working DIC functionality is the odometer and the "Solstice GXP" message on startup.
Cobalt SS forums indicate that the LNF & base Cobalt clusters are interchangable, but only within the same model year. Time to sell this one (It's an '07) and locate a matching year GXP cluster.

After locating a 2008 GXP cluster and installing it, I'm getting complete functionality of all gauges, idiot lights and DIC functions.
