Try to keep the old turbo if they will let you. Could have some fun with it.

Yeah, I could build that jet engine I've been planning...

I doubt they'd let me keep it, but I guess there's no harm in asking. My guess is GM will want it back to analyze what went wrong.

Yeah, they'll want it back. Some think they can tell why it died. Some think you killed it and can tell why. Yet some will think it's alive and still hungry and call it NTF. All doubtful, the best test bench is a vehicle, which it will likely never see again. Scanner

Update:

Still waiting on parts, eveidently a few were backordered. All have now shipped, and they're expecting the last ones to be in tomorrow.

Also, can a Moderator move this to problems and service? Ended up not being a tune related problem.

Just out of curiosity, had you ever tweaked/adjusted the wastegate rod?  (in other words, should I back mine down to stock? :) )

Nope, never touched it. Heck, I never even went looking to the wastegate rod, I couldn't even tell you were it is offhand.

Race tune added to the GMPP tune (3 bar sensors). I added solo exhaust with hi flow cat, DDM charge tubes and K&N filter. If I get into it too quickly from lower RPM's it goes to 25psi and 9 times out of 10 starts knocking. Feels like it's not restricting the boost at all. Lyndon said to check the mass air flow sensor but it's clean.

Any ideas?

how low of RPM. if you lug the engine, it'll knock. also how much knock we talking. 3* KR is not a big deal. 8* is bad

Well, the car went in for service today. They said it should be ready tomorrow, so hopefully I'll have a fully functional car again!

They gave me a really nice rental, a fully loaded Ford Fusion...actually a really nice car, and decently quick for a family sedan. I put it through it's paces on some back roads on the way home, really like it. Certainly not a rental to be ashamed of.

Got the car back today...

...and it's STILL broken. :banghead:

Boosts to 15 psi sometimes, then decides it only wants to boost to 5. At least now the problem seems to be intermittent, but an electrical gremlin, if the culprit, could be a pain to chase down. By the time I had it home it threw a CEL, don't know what the codes are yet.

That's a bummer U.  Things to check for intermittent boost are many, here is what I remember:
Clamps
Vac lines
Waste gate
Bypass valve
IC
Fuel cap (don't know why)
Evap purge valve
More

Good luck!

Evap purge valve? hmmm, I have had evap codes from time to time...

Anyway I'm done with this crap. I'll take it to the dealer, offer no ideas other than the symptoms, and see what they come up with. I'm spending way too much money on gas driving back and forth to Fredericksburg (1.5 hours) for this crap. They're treating me well, but this is getting nuts...

U 238,

The evap purge valve was on a train of messages on the big board that was referenced while I was struggling with a P0101 code.  The sensor or valve is under the engine bonnet and is an easy change I think.  You are still under warranty, so let them at it, but that may be a place to check.  I can try to find that link, but I will warn you, it's about 20 pages of info.  It took me an hour and 3 bottles of Jack to get thru it.

What BG says is correct. if you have never replaced the Evap purge valve, maybe it would be a good idea to guide the technicians over there and have it replaced under warranty.
unfortunately it seems that you have to go by eliminating possible causes..

Well, the codes were p0101 and another code, don't remember the number but it was for a "rich condition."

Dealer wants me to remove all my gauges, replace the K&N filter with a GM one, and buy a complete airbox. (I cut the resonators off the stock one, like a few people have done on here.) All he did was read the tunes, and he says that when he calls a P0101 code to learn how to troubleshoot it the first thing they'll ask if the car is stock or not, and that's why he wants me to undo all that stuff.

Lyndon sent me the diagnostic tree for P0101, and I'm thinking the MAF may have somehow been damaged way back when I cleaned it for the first time. A new one is $75, so I'm thinking I'll just buy a new one, swap it in and see what happens. Then, if that doesn't do it, I'll talk to my dealer, and either do like they say, or buy a GM CAI and do what they say. All the stuff Lyndon sent me points to the MAF, an exhaust restriction, charge pipe leak or bad ECM.

U 238, if you look up in the internet, you can find a new MAF, for less than $75. around 50 is the right price. if it is OK, i can post the link. is it OK Joe?
