Actually, I think their comments pretty well align with ours. We don't mind the small trunk and have done a lot to stiffen the chassis to fix what bothered them and us. And we agree the stock tires are dogs. So, I think they were pretty bang on.

Thoughts?

GJ - I have the Hankook Ventus V12 evo K110 and they are way better than the stockers. They do not have as much grip as I would have liked so will probably give these to the wife (they are supposed to have great wet weather traction) since she uses her redline as a daily driver.

I have the GMPP tune and even with 255's I can break traction at will in 1st or 2nd. If making a lane change I can break them easily in 3rd. Since I plan to move up to the Trifecta tune I am thinking a grippier tire will be better for me. Hope this helps.

That's perfect!

Well so much for your under $150 price limit.  You want grip in the summer get R6's pr A6's, but forget about the rain brother

Yup, I posted that I blew my budget... Truth is, I haven't purchased tires in over 7 years, so I had no idea what they cost.  R6's no good.  The misses may get caught in a rain storm and I can't do that to her.  The Star Specs are the winner at this point, unless some crazy deal comes along.  I'm working on a few things to see how it will go.

Thanks to everybody that chimed in.  It is very helpful!!

I am a true believer in looking at C&D but it was THIS forum that pointed me towards my current tires.

I would recommend askibg around about the Continental ExtremeContact DW tires.

Has anybody down south or out west tried them yet? They are the summer version of the DWS's and may be a little more up your alley. If I could afford a second set of tires for summer, I think I would go this route. Granted I only have a 2.4L so I don't need as much grip as you GJ.

My 2 cents. Just a question for the rest and a thought for the future.

Grip and tread life are opposites.

That being said, My Dunlop star specs have lasted longer than I expected while being extremely awesome in the grip end.
I seriously thought I would need a new set before going to the Dragon, but after rotating them this weekend, they will be fine.
Once I get back, however.....
:)
And when are you hitting the dragon?

CT,

I did look at those.  They rate well, but the star specs seem to fit my needs better ( other than my untrainable budget :) )

Others- these tires may be great for you as I have read many good things about them.

Ok... a Purchase has been made>

Here is the quote from the Original post for reference:

Quote
I am looking for new tires to go on some stock size wheels that showed up at my house one day ( thank you little birdie).  I am looking for a summer tire ( San Diego) with great grip, decent tread life and decent pricing.  I would give up tread life for grip to an extent.  25000 miles would be great, but I'd be good with two years 15-20 k miles total.  Price- about 150 per would be good, 120 per is better  if all else is equal.

Here is what I got:

Here are the details:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&autoYear=2007&autoYear=2007&vehicleSearch=true&minLoad=null&partnum=445WR8SXL&autoModel=Solstice+GXP&autoModel=Solstice+GXP&tireModel=S.drive&autoMake=Pontiac&autoMake=Pontiac&autoModClar=&autoModClar=&minSpeedRating=R

and the tire rack test report: (this is for you Kenny... see, I follow your advice...)

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=131

245-45-18's
154.00 per tire plus shipping = $703.00 to my door step

Should be here in 3-5 days.

The really strange thing about this is that less than 5 minutes (probably closer to 2 minutes) after I hit the "purchase" button, I went back to tire rack to get a pic and some info to post in the "what did you do to your kappa today" thread and WHAM.  $189.00 per tire.  $35 buck per tire in 3 minutes... now that's inflaition!  (tire pun intended)

So now I don't konw if I somehow screwed up and order the wrong tires (I don't think so) or somehow caused a cosmic shift in tire prices?  I was looking back and realized the last time I bought tires was for my 03 Wrangler in 2004 / 2005.  The funny thing is, I've owned 8 cars since then and never had to buy tires....

Same size, two different UPCs.  From time to time, I find the same size tire in two different entries.  Sometimes it's about load rating or about different construction to fit a certain vehicle.  Your order has the cheaper of the two.

OK, so I just called TIRE RACK to see what I did.  They are fantastic!  I ordered them last night after midnight LA. time and they have already been shipped out!

SO here is what the guy told me:

The older version has a higher speed rating (186 vs 168) which is good for me becaue I like to drive in the 175 mph range.  The other difference is they made the new tire is a little bit softer, but he said even Mario Andretti would have a hard time noticing.  So I bought the right one... phew...

TR is very speedy with shipment.  Their main warehouse in Southbend, IN is quite close to where I live in OH.  I noticed that if I didn't place an on a Friday (and the items were stocked in Southbend), the order would arrive next day WITH GROUND SHIPPING.

Congrats on the purchase...make sure you check the build date before you put them on and make sure they haven't been sitting on a shelf for a ton of years!

I will be going with Vredesteins on my new wheels...did you check the Ultrac Sessanta's before you bought the Yokohamas?

I did look at the Vredesteins, but no one near me sold them, neither did Tire Rack.  They seem to be really new to market here in the :us2:

They have great looking tread patterns that's for sure.  It will be interesting to see how they do here.  They are priced about the same as the Yok's that I got.

I purchased the Yokohama Avid Invigor tires this time around. I thought more about tire wear and tire life this time around. Had Falkens 456's and they lasted about three years. So far the Yokohama tires feel good on the car and stick as good as my Falkens did, even better it the cooler temps of fall and spring
