Looks like I might be needing a new thermostat...  Are they easy to change on our cars (GXP)?

I dont think so.
Passenger side and back of the engine block kind of a tight spot to get into.

It is not that bad to replace on the engine, but we do it by removing the plastic tray at the base of the windshield. There are 6 7mm head screws and a couple push pins that hold it in place, also you take the windshield wipers off and disconnect the windshield washer lines and that entire tray comes off and gives very good access to the back side of the engine and only takes about 5 minutes to do.

Hope that helps,
Dave

Seems like I remember needed to follow a special purge procedure when opening the coolant system to prevent air bubbles and subsequent overheating.

Any opinions on that Dave?

Thanks!

Also, if your car is heating up to 230ish and then will go down in temp all the sudden and then do it again next time you drive it may be an air bubble.  There was a GM fix for that issue and it worked in my car.  You may want to search for those threads.  Also, if your coolant is below the plastic line in the overflow tank that may cause the issue to occur more often.

Yes but in Spanish because you will probably get a wet back, and front too.

Problem I have now is the car won't warm up. If I run it hard I can get it to about 180 for a minute or two then it drops back the high 160's. Not sure if you have to use the special procedure (like Critterman uses) or not for the t-stat.

This is the thread I used to change out mine. It's not difficult, just a pita to reach. Especially if one of the clamps is angled wrong.  I had an intermittent ---F temp reading on the DIC and it was a broken seal on the t-stat.

Last couple of days it seems to be working. I'll keep an eye on it.
