Title: MotoGP
Post by: elff on July 26, 2014, 10:43:08 AM
I figured I would start a separate thread as we tend to talk about this in the F1 thread a lot.

It's been an exciting year.
2 Honda's in the lead with Marquez riding amazing.

What I really like is that Rossi is on a bike that is not as competitive, but he is riding superbly and is in 3rd place.  If he was on one of those 2 Honda's he might be leading this year.

Elff's wistful speculation of what could be.... :)

I barely have time to catch F1, I don't think MotoGP will win out over rebuilding my retaining wall....

elff: i just hope you won't get a new R1, oh boy, I will be hating you even more!!!

I closely watched all the races this year and I attended one in Holland which was a mix, all riders changed the bikes during forming lap and then all got to pits to change back to slick tires bike. With Rossi starting from last position because of wrong management in tire pick before race and finishing in a super 5th position. That race a Ducati was leading a lot of laps. I felt bad for Marc, because 90 000 fans were amazing, every time when Rossi was passing it was like a full wave of spectators cheering and standing up and almost nothing till the end for Marc. It must be not so nice, being so great rider, breaking almost all possible records and the fans still loving the old guy. He must learn that skill too.

I was thinking this year to plan a trip to Sevilla to the last race of the season but because last race for sure won't be the deciding championship winner race I dropped the idea.

I'm pleased to see so many spectators in Europe especially at every race 90k in Holland, 100k in Germany, etc. I still enjoy every race and I think is much more entertaining than F1, but probably is just me.

No R1, I think what I am getting is way cooler.
Liquid Graphite FZ-07.
I just could not find another Buell XB9SX that had a combination of the mileage and price I wanted and then Yamaha came out with this bike.  Similar short wheelbase, steep angle on the front fork and underslung exhaust.  I just had to get one.

I completely agree with you on everything you stated about Rossi.  It is pretty crazy that he has completely changed how he leans off the bike.  I am not sure why he did that, but he has been just as successful.

Post by: elff on July 27, 2014, 08:36:51 PM
I looked at one of those.  They are a big bike,  500lbs which is a little bit too much for me.  Little people need littler bikes.
Actually the MotoGP bikes would rule

Title: Re: MotoGP
Post by: cbr6 on July 28, 2014, 06:24:43 PM
Get an FZ-09 much better than the  FZ-07
Title: Re: MotoGP
Post by: elff on July 28, 2014, 06:56:57 PM
I completely disagree as do most experts who have driven both.

The 09 has more HP and the triple is freaking amazing

The 07 wins every other category
Price
Lighter Weight
Better Handling
No drive by wire
WAAAAY BETTER Display
Seat Design [Dual on the FZ-07]

The FZ-09 needs about $1000 immediately to cure the Suspension and Engine mapping

With my height and weight, I will not need to change the FZ-07 suspension at all and the throttle, engine and Trans are spot on.

Title: Re: MotoGP
Post by: cbr6 on July 30, 2014, 06:38:14 PM
That's cool, but the FZ07 has even lower grade suspension.
Title: Re: MotoGP
Post by: elff on July 30, 2014, 09:02:49 PM
Except it works better than the 09 suspension.
The reviews that you read for both bikes are dead on and the 07 rates better on handling.

Its kind of like kappas
Individual specs didn't have anyone thinking the solstice could dominate the SCCA T2 class
Yet it owned everyone else

It's parked about 2' to the right of the FZ-07
:D
My goal for 2015 is to get physically fit and convert it to a race bike.  It's cheaper than racing a car, and much cheaper than constantly fixing my jeep and I can do all the mechanical work myself.

Add one more on my hating.

I keep looking to R1 and GSXR for something similar, especially that I might stay another year here and it is a petty not to go to track days. So I know what you are saying, except the fact I can't ride anything lower than 1000 (maybe Gix 750) because they are too small for me. :(

Not sure if I already posted these but here is what I bought in the last months:

elff: I couldn't find an estimated price of the Skully, can you help, I read might be over 1k, but how much over?
I presume you are aware of stand alone HUDs for helmets also about this:
http://www.huntercreate.com/videos.htm

I don't see too much of a point for viewing rears when on a bike, only in group riding I felt I need more rear view and I preferred to stay in the back of the group.

SA: no bus rides smart***, I live so close to the office that I walk, is about 6 mins away
Actually I have a bike, I burrowed to a friend years ago, I might need to burrow it back
I only tested these and they went back to the storage  :gaah:

Its closer to 3k but im not one to really care about stuff like that if its something i like.
Ive seen the attached HUDs and I havent found one I liked.
The skully hit all my points.  The FZ-07 has awesome mirrors which is going to really help with the work commute.

and the streak ends at 10.  Still a damn good finish for Marquez.  It's crazy they they say his younger brother is faster.  How can you be faster then 10 First place finishes and a 4th in 11 races.
Also
I swear Rossi is on the podium every race.   He is wrestling every ounce out of the yamaha.  I really love watching him ride.  The Dr. is uber smooth.   He has me inspired.  My goal is to be ready for the racetrack next year and I will be modifying my Ninja over the winter for it.

In MotoGP at the moment that is true but Honda is not the champ in all series.

After owning a CBR F2, F3i and RR i can say I am done with Honda street bikes
They are fast and handle great but buzz like a hornets nest.
Kawasaki and Yamahas are so much more street friendly

I drove for some thousands of miles R6 2005-2007 and I didn't like it at all, too crazy, it's either accelerating like crazy or is dead.
I always liked Gixxers and now I think the R1 after 2008 is better.

Aside from the looks, i agree on the Suzukis being well rounded and comfortable.
Depending on the year, the older R6 did have a throttle issue.

I do like a lot of Ducati's.
If they could just make one with a reasonable seat height for us short people.
Title: Re: MotoGP
Post by: cbr6 on August 25, 2014, 09:10:23 PM
damn how short are you? I'm 5'7" and have no trouble, and me best friend is 5'2" and has no trouble riding it either.
Title: Re: MotoGP
Post by: elff on August 25, 2014, 10:12:12 PM
Riding is never the issue.  It's touching when the bike stops. How much of an angle does your 5'2" friend need to lean the bike to touch the ground?  At some point you hit the angle where the weight will starts to make the bike fall over so you are actually holding it up.
I really want to see a pic and or video of your 5'2" friend on a non lowered Ducati.

My first bike was a an old Ducati, 600 SuperSport, very torqy, awesome bike for city, I like it but is a pain for long trips, the vibration was killing my arms and legs. It was looking like an 125cc bike when I was on it :)
I still like Ducatis because they are pretty ok for tall riders and they look great but I won't buy one anymore.
Title: Re: MotoGP

Just barely over 30".  That's pretty much what my FZ has so that would be a non issue.

There are a bunch of us Non-Crotch rocket riders who keep passing each other and we have all started talking when the traffic bogs down.
It's me on the FZ, 2 variations of Suzuki SV650s and a guy with a Ducati HyperMotard.
All pretty awesome bikes in their own way.

I didn't see the race yet, common, be more creative if you want to spoil the results, like keeping the TV on sports new channel when I'm around

61% includes also the track incline ;) or banking, i think is called and influence a lot ... look at the tire profile at the edge ;)

Quote
On Monday morning Rossi underwent a new medical check with Dr. Michele Zasa from Clinica Mobile.

After the check Rossi returned to the garage where Movistar Yamaha MotoGP members and teammate Jorge Lorenzo were shooting a TV commercial for Movistar.

The following questions were put to Valentino as he missed yesterday’s post-race media debrief and TV interviews.

Valentino, how are you today?
"I’m fine, everything is ok, and this is the most important thing. I did not injure myself too much except for a big bump to the head. Last night I had a little headache but today I'm fine, I'm 100%. It was a real shame because before the race we made a change that would have helped me a lot; the bike was strong, I was going well, I had recovered the gap in the first few laps and I was there with the leading riders. I felt good and I am sure I could have made a good race, so it was a real shame to fall. In a way I'm almost glad because even though we had a difficult weekend on Sunday we were competitive and this was supposed to be a track that is not very good for us."

Have you watched the race? What can you say about your crash and about your rivals’ race?
"Unfortunately, like Iannone I went onto the artificial grass. This is always very dangerous and especially in these cases because the track was still wet from the morning shower and there was nothing to be done. Marc and Dani tried to stay on track on the slick tyres but they took a big risk and in fact they crashed. In my case, if I had gone off track one meter before, I would have just gone wide, instead I touched the grass and I fell."

We have a triple header of back-to-back races ahead of us in Asia and Australia. How do you see the coming races?
"Now there are three races in a row, three races that are all beautiful and I know all tracks very well. I like all of them a lot. I will try to do my best as we have done in the last races."

I still watch all MotoGP races while I fly. Don't spoil, I'm 2 races behind of this one.
What I love this season, seems like Honda is one of the weakest, ok not as weak as Aprilia but seems Yamaha is better developed this year and in some races Ducati flys by and Suzuki is very close to Honda.

I still love the Doctor, only one to fight with the Armada

Just finished watching Italy race from Mugello, I thought is going to be a boring race because Rossi out with a blown engine and Lorenzo on the first place with some gap till the 2nd place Marc Marquez.

I was so wrong, the race final laps were amazing and literally elbow to elbow between Lorenzo and Marc, over passing each other 2-3 times in last 2 laps with a finish of 0.01s difference. Also battle for 3rd place between Andrea Iannone and Dani Pedrosa, I could not image that Ducati with Iannone can win in front R2D2 (this is how I call Dani Pedrosa) but I was wrong again.

Can't wait to watch the Spanish and Dutch races.

F1 is not because of me, you can blame the little brother as much as you want but don't throw F1 at me. Believe me, MotoGP races are much more interesting about racing and not all the details around it as F1.

No. The one with two tires was the winner.

Track dried out so it was a mad scramble to change bikes in time to put down laps on dry weather slicks.

It's a shame they ran him over on turn one, but that's the risk you take.

I kept thinking peddle faster dude you're going to get run over!  But maybe that's how he lost his right leg to begin with.

MotoGP starts at 1pm today.

Zarco continues to be fast.  Lets see if his team can choose the right race day tire so he doesn't drop off the pace with 5 laps to go.
Rossi qualifying 8th which means he could win.  For some reason he always ends up starting a race in the 2nd or 3rd row and then ends up 1st through 4th on race day.  I almost wonder if he does that on purpose to test the tires he is actually going to use on race day, vs trying to get the best time on tires that won't last.

Not sure about this year, but last year most important on the limited time of tests/qualification was to nail the setup for long term racing rather than for fastest times on a lap. This was obvious but also the riders were pointing to this.

I didn't agree with Dorna changing rules/tires and teams not carrying anymore as much for qualification rather than best setup for the whole race. They kind of killed the qualification aspect.

That showed in this race.
Zarco led for most of the race and then his tires gave out and he dropped back significantly.
Rossi meanwhile battled from 8th to 3rd.  If he had gone with a harder front tire, I think he would have won. His tires gave out, but he is better at preserving them than most people.

I need to avoid this thread. I can’t afford another race series getting me hooked. F1 is enough for now.

MotoGP is pretty quick.
Record it, fast forward through GP3 and 2 and watch GP.
