VA: Lunch in Upperville?
« on: December 16, 2008, 08:36:30 AM »
For Midlife's tour we ate lunch in a really neat restaurant in upperville va.  It was an english pub that was built in 1750 and the food was great.  I have been thinking of going back.  Anyone else interested in a drive and dine?

Joe, I could not find the best place to post this so can you move it wherever it belongs.  Also, how about a Mid Atlantic section.  One problem with the other board was you have to check both NE and SE sections for the mid atlantic.

The Mid East section covers VA MD DC and DEL.  Is there a better way to do this?

I'd like to go back also.  I've sold my pool table in the garage, they pick it up Saturday some time so this weekend is off.

I have lived in No. Va. to long to plan anything involving cars in January, but weather permitting, OK by me. Someone needs to make reservations this time, that lady scared me when we said we had no reservations last time.

You don't know where Upperville is?  That's where they burried Jack Kent Cooke, and if you don't know who he is, then just shame on you

I did try RandMcNally and it just showed Central Virginia.  Mapquest did work, however.

Just an FYI:  The Saturday, Jan 17th is the weekend before the inauguration in DC....how is traffic going to be?

As for not know where upperville is or who Jack Kent Cooke (aka former owner of the Redskins). I'm not a native Virginian (I need a raspberry icon)   :D

Traffic in DC is always bad, that is why you drive the back roads.  According to Mapquest it is almost 120 miles and a little over two hours for you.

PS.  I'm not even from VA

Can't agree with you more:  Back roads have always been my preference.....funner drive, no large Semis, more enjoyable ride    :)

And not being from VA, I won't hold that against you   :D   being that I'm from TEXAS  :usa:

He was a Canadian..  who loved radio stations, sports teams but mostly younger women..below from Wiki..

Cooke was married five times; two of those marriages were to his final wife. His first marriage, to Barbara Jean Carnegie in Toronto in 1934, ended in 1979 in what was at the time the largest divorce settlement in history—$42 million. The presiding judge was Joseph Wapner, who later came to fame as the judge on The People's Court. They had two sons: John Kent Cooke and Ralph Kent Cooke.

His second marriage, to Jeanne Maxwell, lasted 10 months.

Cooke's third wife, Suzanne Elizabeth Martin, had a baby girl whom she named Jacqueline Kent Cooke when Jack Kent Cooke was 74 and she was 31. However, the marriage was dissolved after 73 days. She sued Cooke for $15 million.[5] Jacqueline Kent Cooke has sued the estate seeking $275 million,[6], but the case was thrown out on November 24, 2008. [1]

Following his death, it was revealed that his final wife, Marlene Ramallo Chalmers—a former drug runner from Bolivia who was 40 years his junior—had been cut out of his will.[7] They had married in 1990, divorced in 1993 (after she made headlines in May 1992 by accidentally shooting herself in the finger and in September 1993 by driving drunk in Georgetown with a man pounding on the hood of her Jaguar convertible), and remarried in 1995. She filed suit against the estate and reportedly received $20 million in a settlement reached about a year after Cooke's death.

The bulk of Cooke's $825 million estate went into establishing the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation to help struggling people achieve the same success that he enjoyed. The stated mission of the foundation is to "help young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through education."

The other terms of his will reveal multiple changes of heart regarding his wives and children, and received considerable public attention at the time of his death
