Review: Sig Sauer P226 Elite
« on: April 01, 2009, 07:59:26 AM »
Figured I would review my favorite hand gun just for kicks, I will quote the manufacturer as he explains things pretty well.
How do you improve on the world's best pistol? By adding enhanced ergonomics and new features including an enhanced trigger system with an astounding short reset. The new P226® Elite is the next generation P226 and features an ergonomic beavertail grip, front cocking serrations, front strap checkering, custom wood grips and the new Short Reset Trigger or SRT. SIG engineers designed the SRT to provide you the same great safety and smooth action of the SIG DA/SA with a comfortable reset that is 60% shorter for faster trigger return and surgical control during high speed shooting. The P226 Elite is available in 9mm, or .40 S&W. Also available in an all Stainless version.

Mine is the matte black just like the picture, it's in .40 S&W but I will most likely order the Sig .357 barrel for it as well. I took it to the range and shot some very nice tight groups all the away out to 25 yards right out of the box, no jams no problems typical Sig.

Pro's: It just works as designed, it is a very reliable handgun and I can carry it easily in an inside the pants holster. It comes with all the upgrades done at the factory and you can add an addition barrel to change the caliber. Very accurate.

Con's: It's expensive, quality usually is. uhh OK what else, oh yea ammo is expensive too, I guess that's about it for the negative

Now all we need is a secure, easily accessible way to store it in the car, and we'll be all set.

Simple, inexpensive, accurate enough (if the threat is real far away then it isn't a threat, is it?!?!?!), small, and easy to clean. Bersa 380.

And mainly stays at home. The "wrong places" in Kansas City will never be blessed with my presents, and just really isn't needed many other places. KC area is pretty safe.

Sometimes I take this out of my safe for some fun at the range.

My Dad was issued this in WWll as a pilot of an Army PBY5A he captained in the South Pacific doing air/sea rescue and bomber escort. He gave it to me before he passed away. Neat piece. Makes me want a contempory stainless steel one, but no need. (Won't make my Sky handle better.)

There has been a recent upturn in violence from MS 13 in this area, I think it is because of a recent county law change, if you are stopped for a traffic violation the officer can request proof of Citizenship now. I may start carrying full time again, have to go back to TAC school to refresh my run and gun skills. I don't run very well so I better gun well.

I have a .380 derringer, my bike gun. I have taken it to the range not much use after 7 yards. I like shooting helium ballons at 100 yards in an open quarry with handguns, that will sharpen your skills. I hit about 3 out of 10 with the .40, 0 out 10 with the .45 and 2 out of 10 with the 9mm. I hope to never pull mine against a threat, but want something bigger than a .380 so the guy doesn't laugh at me. I figure the guy against me will be holding the gun sideways and not be able to hit any thing anyways.

Yeah, guess I'm too old, never did understand that stance. I've always shot better using the sites on the gun.  :idiot:

Yeah, its for the times you can't carry, and putting it in the trunk gets pretty conspicous sometimes. I've thought about one of the little boxes, but where to put it and how to secure it gets to be a problem. I'm thinking maybe a bracket held down by the forward seat mounting bolts. I have a Para LDA .45 Carry, so size isn't too much of an issue.

That case has a steel cable permanently attached to it fro securing it to the seat rail, it's less than 2" think so behind the seat with the cable attached to the seat rail seems like it might work. Or I could put mine in my trunk and hook it to my style bar, see it is good for something.

Lil Goat I take it that concealed carry is legal in your neck of the woods?  I wish it was here in Hellinois.

Anyone want to know how that stupid hold the gun sideways thing started?

Story that I heard and it makes sense is, are you ready for this Hollywood.  It seems that some idiot actors were having an issue where the spent shell casings (blanks) were being ejected back and hitting them in the face and they weren't wearing any eye protection.  Some nit wit suggested that they hold the gun sideways so the spent blanks would eject down.  Moron gang bangers see the movies and think thats cool and since they don't understand how to shoot anyway they adopt the stance.  Here is the thing you have to be shooting with your left hand for this to work and not eject the cartridge up which is what would happen on the majority of semi auto pistols which eject to the right.  I wonder how many gang bangers holding the gun in their right hand end up getting injured by the spent round and still miss what they were shooting at.

That would probably be most of them. Military training, years of private shooting, I tried it a couple of times at the range for the fun of it. Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn unless I was right on top of it. Makes sense that it came out of Hollywood, they'll believe anything in the movies.

I carried the SIG P226 9mm for many years in the 1980’s. An excellent weapon overall, although for some reason I was a better shot with a “wheel” gun. I gladly traded capacity over accuracy (as Lenin is quoted, “Quantity has a Quality of its own"). I gave the SIG to my oldest son when I switched over to a Glock 22 .40. The Glock is a good handgun also and is less complicated (no exposed hammer or de-cocking lever).

The moronic “banger” stance is exactly that! Unless the situation dictates otherwise or you have an arm out of action, a two-handed grip and firm stance will give you better accuracy. Just in case, we always practiced a one-handed grip, with both “strong” and “weak” hand…….

Glocks are great guns, but I think they are quie ugly. Can't carry an ugly gun.

I have a picture somewhere of a Glock with the sights relocated to the side of the slide.

The problem with behind the seat or in the trunk is that you can't access it without getting out of the car. I would like to be able to store the weapon before I get someplace, especially if that place is a crowded parking lot. I would also like to minimize the time I would have to spend standing outside the car if, for instance, it was raining or cold.

Finally a use for the style bar ! Congratulations !

Glocks are indeed ugly. Paint it red and it would look like you got it from a toy store. Arizona law allows you to keep a firearm in a vehicle anywhere you want, even concealed, as long as it is holstered and your not a prohibited possessor (convicted felon, illegal alien, etc.). You can even have the weapon part hidden on you as long as enough of the holster is visable to ID it as such. Besides, this state gives out CCW permits (class + background check) like they were candy......

The issue for me is not so much the legal restrictions as the security considerations. If I have to leave it in the car I don't want anyone to know its there, or be able to take it if they do know about it.
